SWAT team called to arrest suspect in Sacred Heart

RENVILLE COUNTY–A suspect wanted on a Mille Lacs County warrant for fleeing a police officer and hitting him with his car was arrested Friday in Sacred Heart with the assistance of a SWAT team from the Brown-Lyon-Redwood-Renville Emergency Response Unit .

On Friday, Nov. 30, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office learned of an arrest warrant for Dwight P. Steele, Jr., 38, of Elk River, and that Steele may have been at a residence in Sacred Heart.

The warrant was issued by Mille Lacs County for Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle, 4th Degree Assaut on a Police Officer and Driving after Cancellation-Inimical to Public Safety.

Steel was charged with striking an officer in Mille Lacs County with his vehicle while attempting to escape law enforcement. Steele did escape and a warrant was issued.

Law enforcement obtain a search warrant to search the Sacred Heart residence for Steele. Several attempts to get Steele to surrender were unsuccessful. Due to Steele’s past assault and past aggressive behavior the Brown-Lyon-Redwood-Renville (BLRR) Emergency Response Unit/SWAT Tema was called.

At 7:43 p.m., following entry into the house, Steele was located and arrested by the team without incident. He was transported to Renville County Jail, where he will be held until Mille Lacs County takes custody of him.

Two other people at the residence prior to the search were also arrested and booked for Aiding an Offender. A third person had earlier attempted to flee from the house, but was captured, arrested and booked into Renville County Jail for Fleeing a Peace Officer and Aiding and Offender. The names of the three suspects has not been released, pending review and formal charging by the Renville County Attorney’s Office.
