New Ulm school bus, Heartland Express bus collide; no one hurt

NEW ULM — A District 88 school bus and a Heartland Express bus collided Wednesday afternoon at 11th North Street and Jefferson Street.

No one was injured in the collision. There were about 30 students on the school bus, driven by Richmond Wayne Scharf, 71, of New Ulm. The Heartland Express bus, driven by Steve Joseph Messerli, 32, of New Ulm, had no passengers.

According to the New Ulm Police report, Scharf was eastbound on 11th North Street, and Messerli was northbound on Jefferson Street. Both buses entered the intersection at the same time, and Messerli’s bus struck the passenger side of the school bus. There was moderate damage to the school bus, and severe damage to the front end of the other bus.

Another school bus was brought in to take the students home.
