Minnesota Music Hall of Fame honors 2014 inductees
NEW ULM-The Minnesota Music Hall of Fame added six new names to the record book Friday night during an induction ceremony at Turner Hall. The 2014 inductees include Gene Eiden, Irv Williams, Steve Murphy, Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Tony Jambor and Whitesidewalls.
The first inductee of the night, Gene Eiden, served as the first full-time Director of the Rochester Lourdes High School Band. Eiden and the band were on hand to play when ever a traveling dignitary or foreign head visited Rochester Airport.
Irv Williams, also known as “Mr. Smooth, is a saxophonist & Jazz Master Musician. At 95, he still performs weekly at the Dakota Jazz Club. In 1984 he was the first jazz musician to be honored by the state of Minnesota with his own Irv Williams Day.
Steve Murphy began playing the guitar at age 12 and played in several bands. In 1977 he joined with his brother Mike to form the Murphy Brothers Rock Band and he has been playing ever since. Murphy estimates that he has written more than 100 songs in his career.
The Rochester Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1919 and consists of 70 professional musicians, some of whom have been with orchestra for fifty years. Jeff Amundson and David Townsend accepted the award on behalf of the orchestra.
Tony Jambor started playing the accordion at age seven. In the 50’s and 60’s he established his career as a club entertainer in the Twin cities. In 1963 he had his own television show “polka Jamboree” on WTCN now named KARE 11.
The last inductees, The Whitesidewalls are an Upper Midwest doo-wop, rockabilly, and rock’n’roll band that has been working for more than 40 years and recently created a two-act musical call “Love Potion #10”. The induction award was accepted by David “Swanee” Swanson and Bill Spalding.
Since the inception of the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, a total of 156 individuals and bands have been inducted.
An induction showcase will be held today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Music Hall of Fame next to the Public Library. The public is invited to meet the 2014 inductees.
