Court Proceedings

Brown County

District Court

• A Felony third-degree assault-substantial bodily harm charge and two counts of misdemeanor domestic assault were filed Jan. 5 against Juan Manuel Ocampo-Bunola, 48, 1522 Boettger Rd., New Ulm.

According to court documents, New Ulm Police were dispatched to 1st North and Minnesota Street at 11:49 p.m. Oct. 13, 2023 for an assault between a man and woman. A witness said a man hit a woman in the face. Police were unable to find individuals involved in the incident.

At 1:13 a.m., Oct. 14, Patrolman Chris Davis met with a victim and another individual in the law enforcement center lobby. The victim and second witness did not speak fluent English so another individual translated for them.

The victim appeared to be emotional, crying and said she and the second witness were downtown earlier and met Ocampo-Bunola who she said took her cell phone from her and he was upset because the woman was in a relationship with another individual. The victim she she was in a sexual relationship with Ocampo-Bunola for about four years.

The victim said Ocampo-Bunola pulled her hair and slapped her with an open hand four times, and pushed her onto a bench, injuring her left arm. Officer Davis saw what appeared to be a recent abrasion on a swollen upper lip on the victim.

The second witness gave the victim and Ocampo-Bunola a ride in her vehicle. Ocampo-Bunola returned the victim’s cell phone. Officer David viewed part of a video of the vehicle ride that was in Spanish.

An individual said there was conversation of the assault in which Ocampo-Bunola admitted assaulting the victim. Officer Davis recorded that part of the video that was translated and noticed Ocampo-Bunola pulling the victim’s hair during the ride.

Officer Davis talked with Ocampo-Bunola at his residence and said the victim was intoxicated and gave her phone to him. He denied hitting, pushing or pulling her hair, claiming she fell on a bench because she was intoxicated. Ocampo-Bunola was arrested for domestic assault.

New Ulm Police Investigator Tara Martin obtained copies of the victim’s records from Allina Health and learned she had multiple contusions and a closed nasal bone fracture.
