Turner gym meet draws 312 girls

JEAN MEYER, junior at Cathedral High School, was one of four entrants from New Ulm in the advanced division of the invitational girls gymnastics meet here Sunday. She scored high in several events, although official tabulation won’t be known until later today. The meet drew 312 entrants from 13 cities. Right, Jean performs on uneven bars.
The invitational girls gymnastics meet sponsored by Turner Hall Sunday in New Ulm drew 312 entries, according to Dave Chapman, gym instructor at Turner Hall.
The meet was so big that the 13 teams went home without results being tabulated. The paperwork should be completed today and results will be published later.
Gymnasts came from Fairmont, Win-dom, Owatonna, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Rochester, Red Wing, Faribault, Shoreview, St. Peter, Minnetonka and New Ulm.
Some were regular gym teams and some were dancing schools that included gymnastics. New Ulm had the only Turner-sponsored team. Some cities were represented by YMCA teams.
It was a long, long day with activity starting at 10:30 a.m. and running eight hours to 6:30 p.m. finish.
The beginning gymnasts, 165, were split between Jefferson School and Turner Hall gyms. The 95 intermediates competed in senior high gym, as did the advanced group.
The gymnasts competed by age group and experience level.
The advanced group consisted mostly of senior high school girls, but there were a few contestants as low as sixth and seventh grades who performed well.
The girls performed on balance beam, uneven parallel bars, vaulting and floor exercise. These are the same four events that high school gymnastics teams use. However, girls who were members of high school gymnastics teams were not eligible to compete in this meet.
New Ulm had five girls in the beginning class and four in the advanced class. Competing in the latter group were Jean Meyer, Marie Byer, Alice Byer and Stacy Roeder. Beginners were Jill Horner, Nancy Sellner, Kathy Kretsch, Tammy Hanson and Kelly Roeder.
Chapman said this meet was a tuneup for the girls state gymnastics meet May 10 at Gustavus.
