Brown county swains are either becoming bashful, or Dan Cupid, the little God of Love is increasing the effectiveness of his elusive wiles, judging from the big slump in the number of marriage licenses issued by Clerk of Court Carl P. Maniderfeld during the past year, as compared with 1920, which was a banner year with a total of 258 marriage licenses. In 1921 the number was 209 and in 1922 Mr. Manderfeld issued 176 permits to wed. The past year was some improvement over 1922 for the total number of licenses issued was 185.
Even if those couples who secured their marriage licenses outside of Brown county had obtained them of Clerk of Court Manderfeld, this would hardly suffice to bring the total up to the 1920 or 1921 mark, as the difference is too great.
Dearth of Marriages.
The dearth of marriages in this county is difficult of explanation, especially if one is to believe the oft-repeated claim that the cost of living is on the toboggan. Notwithstanding this claim, if based upon facts, it must be admitted that securing the coin of the realm in sufficient quantity to successfully combat the cost of living has not been an easy task, and this circumstance is probably responsible in great measure for the falling off in the marriage mart.
October High Month.
October knocked the eye out of June, as the “Marital month of roses,” as during the former month 29 1 census were issued by Clerk Manderfeld as against 26 in June. September comes a close second, for 27 couples were given permits to marry by the clerk. April comes fourth with 19 and August and November trailing in the near offing. The former month had 17, while in November there were 16. May had 14. There were 8 in January, 9 in February and December and 5, the least of the year, in March.
There were 87 licenses issued during the first half of the past year and 98 during the last half.
Divorces Number Five.
The divorces granted during the past year number but 5. This is a good record for Brown, but the number should be less. However, the number is small compared with those issued in other counties, if population forms the basis of the computation. One divorce was issued in January, another in August, two in September and one in December. In 1922, the number was eleven.
