Long-time New Ulm residents Myrtle (Griebel) Brand and Donald J. Brand celebrated their 70th (Platinum) wedding anniversary on June 5, 2024. The couple was married in New Ulm on June 5, 1954 at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church.

Known to the community as “Don and Myrt,” the couple has raised eight children: Joan (Untiedt), John, Jean (Winter), Jim, Jeff, Marie (Humbert), Marg (Wall) and Jenny (Portner). All members of the family were students in the Catholic school system and graduated from Cathedral High School.

Don (“Lefty”) worked for many years as a sports writer for both The Journal and KNUJ Radio before he retired. Both Don and Myrt have worked as volunteers for many years in the New Ulm area and are now enjoying life surrounded by 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way.

The couple will hold an house celebration at Herman Heights Park Shelter #2 on Saturday, June 8th from 1:30pm-4:30pm.
