Thumbs Up The Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights take basketball state title The Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights girls basketball team won the Class A State Girls Basketball Tournament for the first time in program history last weekend, capping off a 32-1 season. The Knights are just the second girls area team from the Tomahawk to win a state title in history, the first being Wabasso in 2004 in the Tomahawk Conference. One of the more interesting developments emerging from this year’s election race for Minnesota Senate District 15 involves the Jan. 6, 2021, rampage at the U.S. Capitol. THUMBS UP Public hearing on ‘shotgun-only’ status well attended On Wednesday, the Brown County Law Enforcement Center training room was full of firearm enthusiasts sharing their opinions on the “shotgun-only” status of Brown County at public hearing. The Minnesota Legislature repealed the “shotgun-only” zone for deer hunting in the state. The change allows hunters to use rifles statewide, but counties have the right to remain shotgun-only by passing an ordinance. THUMBS UP Don’t let snow stop you from Baggin’in the Street The Baggin’ in the Street bean bag tournament is returning to downtown New Ulm this Saturday. Dozens of teams will compete in an outdoor tournament to be the best at baggin.’ The tournament officially begins at 10 a.m. with registration starting at 8:45 a.m. The event is a fun way to get people outside during the winter. THUMBS DOWN Old man winter returns with a vengeance Last week it looked like Minnesota might get an early spring. The Valentine’s Day weekend saw unusually high temperatures. On Feb. 13, New Ulm set a high temperature record for the day. Walking around without a coat or hat outside was optional. It was wonderful. Then it had to start snowing Wednesday morning and it didn’t quit until late afternoon. Everyone had to break out their shovels again and driving conditions were terrible. THUMBS DOWN Car crash takes out print edition On Wednesday, a vehicle crashed into multiple vehicles outside the House of Print in Madelia before smashing into a nearby utility pole, causing a power outage. As a result, the House of Print was not able to operate its printing press for several hours, meaning no print edition of The Journal as well as other area papers. It is an unfortunate series of events and reminder of the consequences.
