THUMBS UP MLC students return The Martin Luther College (MLC) students are returning to campus. Thursday and Friday were freshmen move in day. Many of the student athletes had returned last week. The fall semester is set to begin next week. It’s a wonderful time of year as New Ulm sees its population increase with a fresh injection of young people into the community. Approximately 185 new students will attend MLC this year along side another 435 returning students. THUMBS UP Brown Co. Fair back with favorable weather The Brown County Fair is underway and unlike many years, the weather is temperate. The fair started Wednesday morning with an afternoon rain shower, but by the time the carnival opened, the rain was gone and humidity with it. Thursday had near perfect weather for touring the fairgrounds with temperatures in the 70s. The rest of the week is looking to have the same temperature. Tone down the anger this political season

“I’m so angry,” the caller told one of our editors. That caller was responding to a column written by a newspaper contributor on diversity. The caller stated he was tired of hearing about diversity. The columnist was stating that diversity might prove to be important in the 2024 election. While the column supported diversity, it also stated that a person’s service record should also be a major factor. The column ended that we need to respect each other. Unfortunately, respecting each other’s opinion or stance on issues is not so popular as Election Day approaches. ...

The email from the American Red Cross stated in all caps: BREAKING “Blood emergency declared , Red Cross donors needed now The Red Cross urged editors to get the word out. “The American Red Cross has now issued an emergency blood shortage as the nation faces dangerous levels of heat and heads out for final summer travel plans. In July, heat impacted blood drives in nearly every state the Red Cross collects blood — a contributing factor to further draw down of an already-low blood supply. THUMBS UP Spikin’ in the Street is back New Ulm’s Spikin’ in the Street volleyball tournament is back for its second year and it looks to be twice as big. After the success of last year’s tournament, it is hard not see this year’s event as a victory lap. Ahead of the 2023 tournament, there were a lot of nay-sayers expressing doubt about a sand volleyball tournament downtown. The doubters were wrong. New Ulm is clearly well suited for this.
