US outlines plan for long-term baby formula imports

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. regulators on Friday unveiled their plan to allow foreign baby formula manufacturers to stay on the market long term, an effort to diversify the nation's tightly concentrated industry and prevent future shortages. The Food and Drug Administration said recent entrants to the U.S. market will have until October 2025 to make sure their formulas comply with federal standards for nutrition, labeling and manufacturing. Trucking regs waived to fight avian flu outbreak

ST. PAUL — In an attempt to protect the state’s poultry industry and prevent the spread of avian influenza, Gov. Tim Walz waived trucking regulations in an executive order on Wednesday. The order is part of the continued efforts to control and contain the current outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Minnesota. Cooking class offered at Senior Center

The next class of the “Friends in the Kitchen” cooking classes will be held at 11 a.m. in Room 111 at the CAST Senior Center on Wednesday, Sept. 14 Chef Renee Retzlaff will teach how to prepare easy-to-make, healthy, inexpensive meals. Attendees to the free class get to sample all the dishes. All are welcome to attend, and no pre-registration is needed. Classes are held on the second Wednesday of each month.

Fresh produce and fruit to be given out Sept. 13

Free produce, fruit and miscellaneous items will be distributed Tuesday, Sept. 13, by the New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf and Second Harvest Food Bank. The distribution will be from 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 1305 S. Valley St. in New Ulm, with signup beginning at 10 a.m. The truckload of food will be delivered from Second Harvest the same day, so people who come to receive the food should not arrive more than 30 minutes before distribution. They should also bring their own bags or boxes. The distribution will be done rain or shine and is open to anyone who needs food assistance.

PAUL — A cooperative agreement between Minnesota and the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced this week seeks to purchase and distribute locally grown, produced, and processed food from underserved producers.
