St. Mary’s boys rout Cathedral

NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s moved one step closer to clinching the Tomahawk Conference title as it raced to a 52-35 victory over New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday in Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball action.

With the win, the Knights improved to 11-2 in the conference and 11-3 overall. Minnesota Valley Lutheran is 10-3 in the conference and Cathedral is 9-4 in conference play. All three teams have three games left in conference play.

Kaleb Wait led the Knights with 15 points and five rebounds. Carson Domeier finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Trent Steffensmeier had 12 points for the Knights.

David Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jevan Wilfahrt finished with 8 points and seven rebounds.

The Knights jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and were never tested. Wait scored 7 of the team’s first 9 points, with Matt Gillis ending the run when he scored with 15:10 left for the Greyhounds.

Trent Steffensmeier put the Knights up 14-5 and 18-8 with a couple of baskets, and the Knights took a 26-11 lead into halftime after shutting out the Greyhounds for the final 6 minutes of the half.

The Knights picked up where they left off in the second half. A 3-pointer by Wait made it 29-11 and Domeier’s basket inside made it 31-11, giving the Knights a 13-0 run at that point. Later, a 3-pointer from Braden Hansen gave the Knights a 39-14 with 14:30 left in the game.

The Knights host Mankato Loyola in a nonconference game on Saturday before hosting Sleepy Eye, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and Cedar Mountain next week.

Cathedral returns to action on Friday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
