WABASSO — Macy Rohlik has been a part of some special teams and experiences during her time at Wabasso High School.
She helped the Rabbits make the Class A State Softball Tournament last year after a 14-year absence and also piloted a growing girls wrestling program at Wabasso.
Now, the senior will look to help lead two new teams in college at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, as she has committed to wrestle and play softball for the Beavers.
“The [Buena Vista] softball coach [Tammy Utley] originally reached out to me to play softball,” Rohlik said. “Then I went on a visit there and then she introduced me to the wrestling coach [Paige Storm] and told me about their program and spoke very highly of it, so I just thought I’d go on another visit and see if I liked the wrestling coach also. I ended up liking her and then I said, ‘Well, let’s just give it a try.'”
Rohlik took both of her visits a couple of weeks apart last fall and the chance to continue staying active in sports during both the winter and spring seasons excited her. She also liked the campus and location, with the college sitting lakeside.
“I really liked the school after my visits,” Rohlik said. “I don’t want to say small because obviously it’s not small, but coming from a small town, it’s a bit smaller than what I might find at some other colleges, so I feel like that makes it feel more close to home … And being on the lake, I love the lake, so I think that’ll be a good experience.”
The Beavers women’s wrestling program had its first season during the 2023-24 winter season. Rohlik is no stranger to helping build a team as she and Camryn Irlbeck helped kick-start the Rabbits girls wrestling.
“With Wabasso, me and my friend Camryn, we really helped start the girls program because we were the first two girls,” Rohlik said. “I kind of know what feels like to be part of that growing situation, so I feel like that’s also why it’s a good fit for me, just because I’m used to the growing part.”
Rohlik is 8-4 on the season with seven falls at 132 pounds for Wabasso and thinks she will stay at that weight in college.
As for softball, Rohlik is excited for her senior year this spring after helping the Rabbits punch their state ticket last season. Rohlik manned third base last season and turned in a .333 batting average with a team-high 30 hits. She also had a team-high 21 RBIs, team-high four triples and added five doubles as an All-Section and All-Journal player.
“I love my teammates and everything,” Rohlik said. “I love being a part of that environment and I think that’s what’s wanted to make me continue my career as a softball player also.”
Rohlik said she expects to play third base or second at Buena Vista but knows she has to work hard to earn her spot in the lineup and plans to do so.
