NEW ULM — Eli Anderson’s two free throws with 4 seconds left in the game erased a 59-58 Sleepy Eye lead and lifted New Ulm Cathedral to a 60-59 win over the Indians Thursday night in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.
Anderson led the Greyhounds (4-8, 4-5) with a game-high 27 points. Quinten Forst added 14 and Logan Goblirsch 11.
Eric Lozano led the Indians (8-5, 4-5) with 15 points. Braylon Nelson added 14 and Brayden Heiderscheidt ended with 12.
The game was tied at 53-53 after Anderson canned a 3 with just over four minutes left in the game, but that was erased by 3s from Lozano and Chase Zufall to give Sleepy Eye a 59-53 lead with 3:39 left in the game.
But those points were the last in the game for the Indians as Sleepy Eye’s poor shooting night, helped by poor shot selection with a lead late in the game, helped the Greyhounds comeback.

“You cannot shoot three 3s when you have the lead with two minutes to go in the game,” Sleepy Eye head coach Shane Heiderscheidt said. “And then we missed two layups and then miss two free throws and lose the game.”
Cathedral won the game from the charity stripe on two Anderson free throws and two charity tosses from Forst before Anderson’s two free throws earned the win.
“The biggest thing for us tonight was that we had multiple contributors.” Cathedral head coach Zach Kaiser said. “Logan Goblirsch had a good game, as did Nate Sprenger attacking the basket, scoring a little bit and drawing defenders.”
The Greyhounds trailed just once in the first half when Lozano hit a basket for a 9-8 Indians lead.
Cathedral held leads of 20-13 and 28-18 on a Forst basket before the Indians made a charge to cut the lead to 28-25 at half.
But it was the second half where Sleepy Eye did not shoot the ball well from beyond the arc making just three of 18 shots from 3-point land.
Sleepy Eye used a 9-0 run to start the second half to take a 34-28 lead.
“We talked about it at halftime,” Kaiser said. “They did not shoot the ball very well in the first half and we knew that they can shoot.”
Cathedral regained the lead at 44-42 on a Forst drive to the basket.
“We did not shoot the ball well tonight,” Heiderscheidt said. “We cannot miss layups and free throws and expect to win games.”
For the game, Sleepy Eye was 10-for-32 in the game from beyond the arc and made just one of eight free throws in the game.
For Kaiser, it was a case of Anderson making clutch free throws at the end.
“It is a tough situation to be at — sometimes even more so when you are at home,” Kaiser said. “He is a good free-throw shooter and a mentally strong kid — this was a big conference and section win. It was also a nice effort from earlier this year when we gave up 90 points to Sleepy Eye.”
