Area roundup: New Ulm girls fall to No. 7 Marshall

Marshall 9, New Ulm 1

NEW ULM — The No. 7-ranked Marshall defeated New Ulm 9-1 in a Big South Conference girls hockey game on Tuesday.

Madalyn Olson had the lone goal for New Ulm unassisted. Eagles goaltender Ava Schmid had 50 saves as the Eagles were outshot 59-4.

New Ulm (4-13-1, 1-3) plays at Mankato East on Thursday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 64, Sleepy Eye 52

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s topped Sleepy Eye 64-52 in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game on Tuesday.

Brecken Hulke led the Knights with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Eli Christensen had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Adam Steffensmeier had 12 points, three assists and seven rebounds, while Mike Balko had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Braylon Nelson led the Indians with 18 points and five rebounds, while Brayden Heiderscheidt had 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

St. Mary’s (8-4, 5-2) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday, while Sleepy Eye (8-4, 4-4) plays at New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday.

Wabasso 84, GFW 48

WINTHROP — Wabasso rolled Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 84-48 in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game on Tuesday.

Brayden Guetter led the Rabbits with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Caden Frericks had 18 points and 19 rebounds with three steals and three blocks. Drew Kemp had 18 points, while Brooks Baune had 13 points.

Cole Jacobson had 17 points for GFW, while Matthew Lee had 10 points.

Wabasso (12-0, 8-0) plays at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday, while GFW (6-5, 3-2) plays at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday.

Nicollet 89, Cedar Mountain 59

NICOLLET — Nicollet cruised by Cedar Mountain 89-59 in a nonconference boys basketball game on Tuesday.

Carson Kettner led the Raiders with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Abe Madson had 17 points. Keegan Hulke had 17 points, and Henry Kennedy added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Thomas Dahmes led the Cougars with 20 points and five rebounds with three steals, while Carson Schiller had 19 points.

Nicollet (9-3) travels to Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons on Thursday, while Cedar Mountain (1-9) travels to Lester Prairie on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

MVL 86, St. Clair 79

ST. CLAIR — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated St. Clair 86-79 in a South Central Conference girls basketball game on Tuesday.

Avery Freier led the Chargers with 22 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Ziva Zahrt had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Olivia Hammer had 15 points, while Violet Hammer had 12 points and four rebounds.

MVL (7-5, 1-1) hosts Le Sueur-Henderson on Friday.
