NEW ULM — The new year has been kind to the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds girls basketball team.

The Greyhounds won their fourth game of 2026 after taking down the Springfield Tigers 60-53 in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game Tuesday evening.

Tuesday’s victory gave the Greyhounds (5-8, 3-5) their third win in a row and fourth in their last five games.

“I tell the girls that the games that maybe are a little bit more of a challenge, we just have to keep working through those games,” Greyhounds head coach Dave Wilfahrt said. “Even the games where it’s a lopsided game, we just have to keep playing hard because it’s going to pay off in the games that are going to be close.”

While Cathedral is hitting its stride more as of late, the Tigers (6-6, 5-4) have had a tough time building off their 3-0 start to the season.

In their first game of the holiday break on Dec. 30, 2025, they fell to Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey. The Tigers bounced back with a win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Jan. 5, but they then lost at Sleepy Eye last Thursday and now to Cathedral on Tuesday.

In Tuesday’s loss, the Tigers connected on some nice 3s but struggled to consistently score in the paint.

“I’ve gotta say they’re tired, a lot of our girls, Jada [Reese], Kendall [Krueger] and Olivia [Milbrath] are playing anywhere between 34 to all 36 minutes in the game,” Tigers head coach Decker Scheffler said. “I could say that can maybe be why we got worn down here a little bit, but you look on the opposite side at Cathedral and they brought one sub in the whole game. Six players. So, there’s no excuse for it.”

Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 20 points, and her physical play inside on defense was key against Springfield’s 6-footer Milbrath and the 5-10 Krueger. Shay Wilfahrt also made 9 of 12 shots from the foul line, including hitting eight free throws in a row.

Margo Finstad added 13 points for the Greyhounds, while Jayde Altermatt had 12 points, Ashlyn Hillesheim had 8 points and Thea Paszkiewicz had 7 points and went 5 for 6 at the foul line, with all of her free throws coming in the second half.

Springfield was led by Krueger’s 15 points, while Jada Reese and Makay Winkelmann each had 11 points and Milbrath had 10 points. Noelle Reese had 6 points on a pair of 3s in the second half also for Springfield.

Both teams trades buckets to open the game before Shay Wilfahrt scored inside and Finstad sank a 3 to give Cathedral a 13-8 lead and prompt a Tigers timeout with 11:19 left in the half.

Hillesheim hit a 3 out of the timeout to put Cathedral up 16-8, but the Tigers roared back and forced a few turnovers with their full-court press.

A 7-0 run had the Tigers down 16-15, forcing a Greyhounds timeout with 7:42 left in the half. A Winkelmann-to-Milbrath layup on a fast break gave the Tigers their first lead, but Shay Wilfahrt answered with a bucket in the paint to retake the lead for Cathedral.

Krueger missed two shots on the Tigers’ next possession, but two offensive rebounds by her teammates gave her a third chance to score, which she did on a long jumper for a 19-18 lead. The lead was brief as Altermatt sank a 3 for a 21-19 Cathedral lead.

Cathedral ended the half strong, getting four free throws by Shay Wilfahrt, a block from Kylie Berdan and a buzzer-beating 3 by Shay Wilfahrt to end the half with the Greyhounds ahead 28-21.

Springfield started the second half out better than they ended the first half. The Tigers chipped away at the Greyhounds’ lead and eventually took their first lead since being up 19-18 after a 3 from Jada Reese and a jumper by Winkelmann put them ahead 38-36. Altermatt answered with a layup and free throws by Paszkiewicz had the Greyhounds back in front.

Noelle Reese knocked down a 3, but Altermatt answered with one of her own from the corner for a 43-41 Cathedral lead.

While Shay Wilfahrt was physical and held her own defensively, she did pick up her fourth foul of the game with almost nine minutes left to play. She sat the next two minutes and change before re-entering and finishing the game.

“They all did a nice job [defensively in the paint] because we talked about it in practice that Springfield does a nice job of posting up and looking for that lob pass,” coach Wilfahrt said. “We really worked on that in practice and talked about it. You can battle post to post, but you always have to have those helpside defenders as well when our posts, if they get beat, then we can get that lob on the back side.”

Back-to-back 3s by Jada Reese with Shay Wilfahrt on the bench gave the Tigers a 48-45 lead, but a mid-range jumper by Hillesheim, free throws by Shay Wilfahrt and a Shay Wilfahrt-to-Finstad fast-break layup had the Greyhounds up 51-48.

Cathedral never trailed after that.

Cathedral’s win Tuesday also evened the score with Springfield this season after the Tigers beat the Greyhounds in Springfield on Dec. 2, 2025.

Cathedral is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday, while Springfield is at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Thursday.
