Area roundup: Wabasso tops Springfield, moves to 3-0

Wabasso 81, Springfield 74

WABASSO — The Wabasso Rabbits stayed unbeaten in the new season Tuesday by holding off the Springfield Tigers 81-74 in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

The Rabbits led 35-26 at halftime, but the Tigers were able to chip away at the deficit in the second half, outscoring the Rabbits 48-46 in the second half. Despite that late surge of offense, the Rabbits were able to keep up and hold on for the win.

Brayden Guetter led the Rabbits with 25 points, five rebounds, three assists and four blocks, while Drew Kemp added 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Caden Frericks posted his third double-double of the season in as many games with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Tavyn Larson and Jack Burns each chipped in 7 points.

Springfield was led by Isaac Fredin, who finished with 21 points, four assists and three steals, while Madden Lendt had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Brecken Heiling had 12 points and four rebounds. Aiden Moriarty added 6 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Tigers.

The Rabbits shot 60.4% from the floor, while the Tigers shot 41.5%. The Tigers narrowly won the battle on the boards, pulling in 34 rebounds to Wabasso’s 29.

Wabasso (3-0, 1-0) is at Sleepy Eye for a Tomahawk game Friday night, while Springfield (0-2, 0-1) looks to get into the win column when it hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in Tomahawk action on Friday night.

Madelia 82, USC 40

MADELIA — Behind Kaydon Firchau’s second 40-point night of the young season, the Madelia Blackhawks rolled to a 3-0 start on the season with an 82-40 victory over United South Central in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Firchau opened the season with a 40-point game in a win over Cleveland on Dec. 2, passed 1,000 points for his career in a win over Mankato Loyola on Dec. 5 and scored 40 again in Tuesday’s win. He also added six rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Also for Madelia, Dalton Tatro had 16 points and five steals, while Bryce Borkenhagen had 10 assists and five steals and Caden McMullen had 10 points. Leilynd Hundley had six assists off the bench for Madelia.

Madelia (3-0) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther in a Valley Division game at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Central 65, Sibley East 47

ARLINGTON — The Sibley East Wolverines fell to the Central Raiders 65-47 on Tuesday in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Ezra Weber led the Wolverines with 14 points, while Carson Schmidt had 10 points and six rebonuds and RIley Bussler added 7 points, four rebounds and two assists. The Wolverines also got 5 points and three steals from Aiden Bauer, while Kaleb Dummer had 5 points and Montgomery Halquist had four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

Sibley East (2-2) travels to Watertown to take on Watertown-Mayer on Thursday night.

Nicollet 60

GRANADA — Despite Cheyenne Klockziem’s big night of scoring, the Nicollet Riaders couldn’t overcome Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther as the Jaguars pulled out a 75-60 win in a Valley Division girls basketball game.

Klockziem finished with 33 of the Raiders’ points, while Jazmyn Goettlicher had 11 points and Zoie Rengstorf had 10 points and Shelby Beyer had 4 points.

Nicollet (3-3, 2-1) hosts Renville County West on Thursday.
