NUA wins Don Hall Invitational for 1st time

GLENCOE — The New Ulm Area wrestling team turned in a dominant performance at the Don Hall Invitational on Saturday, winning the invite for the first time in the program’s 15 years of competing in it.

NUA finished first with 201 team points ahead of Zumbrota-Mazeppa, which took second with 200 points, and Watertown-Mayer, which finished third with 193 points. There were 10 total teams competing at the invite.

The NUA varsity team had 15 total wrestlers place top six at the invite, led by heavyweight Emerson Johnson, Regan Johnson (121), Kane Johnson (139), Braxton Kiecker (160), Elijah Rieser (145), Chase Wilson (107) and Candon Briggs (172), who all took second in their brackets.

Regan Johnson finished 2-1 with a fall and tech fall, while Kane Johnson was 2-1 with a fall, Wilson was 2-1 with a tech fall, Rieser was 2-1 with a tech fall and major decision, Kiecker was 3-1 with two falls, Briggs was 3-1 with a tech fall and a pin and Emerson Johnson was 3-1 with three falls.

Isaiah Friese (285) took third for NUA at the invite, while Lane Ruch (189) took third, Alex Portner (133) took fourth, Tegan Kral (152) took fourth, Dirk Haynes (189) took fifth, Chael Johnson (114) took fifth, Brayden Miller (127) took sixth and Tilken Fruhwirth (215) took sixth.

NUA started the season strong with three wins at a quad in Mapleton on Thursday, defeating Mankato East 42-24, St. Clair/Loyola 55-12 and Maple River/United South Central 40-18.
