Area roundup: Wolner leads Eagles girls to first victory

New Ulm 2, SSP 1

SLEEPY EYE –Tristyn Wolner’s two-goal night was enough to lift the New Ulm Eagles to their first win of the young season as the Eagles took down South St. Paul 2-1 Friday at the Sleepy Eye Arena.

Despite being outshot 35-17, the Eagles got in front early at the 1:03 mark of the first period when Wolner scored a short-handed goal. Kaelynn Welsh assisted on Wolner’s next goal, which came at the 10:17 mark of the second period to put New Ulm up 2-0.

Macie Hollenback scored at 5:54 of the third period to get South St. Paul on the board, but the Eagles and goalie Ava Schmid held strong after that to secure the win.

The Eagles (1-3) host Waseca at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Clair 76, Nicollet 61

MANKATO — Nicollet fell to St. Clair 76-61 on Friday in a girls basketball game at the Bethany Lutheran College Invite.

Cheyenne Klockziem led the Raiders with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Jazmyn Goettlicher had 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Megan Soost added 13 points also for Nicollet, while Zoie Rengstorf had 9 points and four assists.

Nicollet (0-1) continues play at the BLC Invite on Saturday afternoon.

MCC 55, Wabasso 35

WABASSO — Murray County Central defeated Wabasso 55-35 in a home girls basketball tournament game on Friday.

Kenely Guetter led the Rabbits with 11 points and 21 rebounds with three assists, while Ava Samyn had 8 points and seven rebounds. Elizabeth Morin added 7 points and three rebounds.

Wabasso (0-1) continues the tournament on Saturday.
