WABASSO — Wabasso scored on all but one of its offensive drives as it defeated Renville County West 46-26 in a Nine-man South District, West Subdistrict football game on Saturday.

Wabasso punted to end a drive in the first quarter with a 6-0 lead and never failed to score again, including on a drive to end the half with 2:14 to play.

“I think we did a lot of the little things well,” Wabasso head coach Joe Kemp said. “We were able to get to the edges and then Drew [Kemp] did a nice job of throwing down the field, getting to his second and third reads today. We didn’t execute in all phases, but I think we did a lot of nice things, especially on the edges and down the field.

With the win on Homecoming, Wabasso remains undefeated with three games left on the regular season schedule.

“Today we lost some of our fundamentals, gave up some easy scores,” coach Kemp said. “We’ve got to get better at that and get back to the fundamentals and get healthy. We’ve got some kids dinged up, but I just think doing the little things, trying to do our job instead of trying to do too much. We did a little bit of that today and it got us into some trouble. We have a lot to work on.”

Drew Kemp completed 18 of 26 passes for 254 yards and a score while rushing for 22 yards and two more touchdowns. Zach Skoblik had 10 rushes for 60 yards and a touchdown, and Joe Rohlik had 12 rushes for 54 yards and a TD. Sam Zeug and Nolan Leopold each had a rushing touchdown, with Leopold adding six catches for 78 yards and Skoblik hauling in six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown.

The Rabbits’ first drive lasted 7:10 as Wabasso’s drive ended with a 15-yard rushing touchdown by Skoblik. RCW also marched down the field, but Zeke Olson and Tyson Lightfoot combined for a fourth-down stop and a turnover on downs. Wabasso’s following drive ended in the lone put for the Rabbits, and RCW was able to match the score as Hampton Hebrink ran it in from 2 yards out.

Wabasso’s drive started with a 46-yard completion from Drew Kemp to Jack Burns to set the Rabbits up at the 7-yard line. Zeug was able to punch it in from 2 yards out for a 12-0 lead. Wabasso followed that up as Lightfoot made a diving interception to set up a short field, which Rohlik capitalized on with a 14-yard rushing touchdown.

RCW stayed in the game as Tavyn Larson returned the following kickoff for a touchdown to cut the lead to 20-12, but Wabasso matched down the field with help from a 25-yard completion from Drew Kemp and another 10-yard completion from Drew Kemp to Leopold, ending the drive with a 3-yard rush from Drew Kemp into the end zone as the half wound down.

RCW fumbled on the opening drive of the second half, with Lightfoot again being on the right side of the turnover. Wabasso started the drive with a 20-yard completion from Drew Kemp and ended with a 4-yard rush from Leopold into the end zone for a 32-12 lead. RTR responded with a score by Jacob Savig to cut the lead to 32-20, but Wabasso again scored as Drew Kemp snuck it in from a yard out. Savig salvaged another score as time would out, but Wabasso drained the clock to 1:05 before Drew Kemp connected with Skoblik for a 20-yard touchdown to wrap up the game.
