Area roundup: Helget hits 2,000-assist milestone for Knights

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Marys’ Josie Helget earned her 2,000th career set assist in a 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 sweep of Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match.

Helget had 32 set assists in the game, while Morgan Mathiowetz had 23 kills and 10 digs. Audra Hoffmann had eight kills and six aces, and Natalie Fischer had eight kills and six digs. Brynne Ibberson added nine digs.

For GFW, Chloe Henrichs had seven kills, while Ella Nachreiner had four kills and five blocks. Kinley Bruns had 10 digs, and Kora Schwarzrock had six digs and an ace. Natalie Ahlbrecht had eight set assists.

St. Mary’s (11-4, 5-1) plays in a tournament in St. Clair on Saturday. GFW (0-14, 0-6) hosts Springfield on Tuesday.

Cedar Mountain 3,

Springfield 0

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain swept Springfield 25-20, 25-16, 25-12 in a Tomahawk Division volleyball game on Homecoming week.

Aubrey Steffl led the Cougars in the win with 14 kills and five digs, while Kendra Erickson had 10 kills, 19 set assists, 11 digs and five aces. Reagyn Kleinschmidt added 10 kills, eight assists and six blocks, while Brynn Hoffbeck had 13 digs and Kendal Atkins added four digs.

Kendall Krueger led the Tigers in defeat with eight kills and 15 digs, while Gabby Schenk had four kills. Sophie Mude had eight set assists and four digs, while Taylor Roiger had six assists and four digs and Olivia Simonson had seven digs and two kills.

Cedar Mountain (10-4, 4-2) hosts Lester Prairie on Thursday, while Springfield (2-13, 1-5) is at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday.

Madelia 3, Loyola 1

MADELIA — Madelia defeated Mankato Loyola 25-9, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23 on Thursday in a Valley Division volleyball match.

Makayla Sorenson led Madelia with nine kills and 22 digs, while Grace Tatro had nine kills, 12 digs and two aces. Carissa Sorenson added eight kills, five digs and three aces for Madelia, while Lauryn Grev had 15 digs and five kills, Alicia Lugo had 14 assists, 10 digs and two aces, Adrianne Missling had 14 assists and Emmy Johnson had 12 digs.

Madelia (8-11, 3-2) is at St. Clair on Saturday.

Wabasso 3,

Lester Prairie 1

LESTER PRAIRIE — Wabasso defeated Lester Prairie 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-7 in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Thursday.

Carly Fenger had 12 kills and seven blocks for Wabasso, while Kenley Guetter had 10 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Sara Carlson had 39 set assists, 10 digs and an ace, and Alexa Remiger had 10 digs and four aces. Audrey Johnson added 13 digs.

Wabasso (11-9, 3-3) hosts Redwood Valley on Friday.

Maple River 3, MVL 1

MAPLETON — Maple River downed Minnesota Valley Lutheran 19-25, 25-16, 25-10, 25-15 in a South Central Conference volleyball match on Thursday.

Kayla Martin had seven kills, 17 digs and four blocks, while Marley Schauer had six kills, six blocks and six digs. Jenna Bates had six kills, six digs and a block, and Taryn Gunderson had 20 digs and three aces. Nora Krueger had 13 set assists and eight digs, and Graysie Black had 12 set assists, six digs and an ace.

MVL (10-11, 3-4) hosts Le Sueur-Henderson on Tuesday.

New Ulm 4,

Mankato West 3

NORTH MANKATO — New Ulm topped Mankato West 4-3 in a nonconference girls tennis match on Thursday.

No. 1 singles Carmen Schotzko defeated Monir McCabe 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 for New Ulm, while No. 2 singles Natalie Fischer downed Scarlett Cordes 6-1, 6-0. Lilly Kral topped Sage Matleson 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and Lydia Osborne and Maggie Joyce defeated Claire Heimer and Neva Bohl at No. 2 doubles.
