NEW ULM — In the first quarter of their Southeast District, Red Subdistrict game with Austin Thursday night, the Eagles had Dirk Haynes score on a 1-yard interception return, a Haynes 7-yard touchdown run, a Parker Ranweiler fumble recovery in the end zone on the ensuing kickoff and a Zach Hubbard 5-yard run.
New Ulm put up 30 points in the first 12 minutes and then added two more touchdowns in the second quarter — one coming on a Hubbard 70-yard interception return for a score and an Owen Castleman 1-yard run for a 44-0 halftime lead en route to a 44-7 win over the Packers.
Hubbard finished with three interceptions on the night.
“We wanted to get out to an early lead and our defense was able to come away with two defensive scores,” New Ulm head coach Derek Lieser said. “We talked about scoring in all three phases and we did that tonight — it was a good first half — I don’t think that we have done that in my coaching tenure here.”
Lieser said that he was curious to see how his team came out of the chutes to start the game.
“Our kids were excited — they were ready to go — they have been building for this since June 9 when we put the pads on for the first time this summer,” he said. “I was surprised to see how fast we came out and were able to score. We played a good first half of football for the most part.”
The Packers only score came late in the game against the Eagles’ reserves.
The Eagles were also on the plus side of the turnover battle with three picks from Hubbard and a fumble recovery from Crosby Batt.
“We talk about valuing the football, and if you can win the turnover battle the tide is in your favor,” he said. “We scored in a lot of different ways tonight.”
While Lieser was happy with the dominating win, he was concerned about the his starters (who did not play for most of the second half) did not get enough game conditioning in.
“But our younger players got some quality time tonight,” he said.
The Eagles are at Fairmont next Friday.
