Leavenworth takes 3 seed with win over Lamberton
SLEEPY EYE — A quality start on the mound from Hudsen Jenniges wasn’t enough to lift the Lamberton Long Sox past the Leavenworth Orioles in a Region 2C seeding matchup on Saturday.
Both the Long Sox and Orioles had already clinched a Class C state tournament berth heading into the matchup, but a lack of production at the plate left Lamberton with a 3-1 loss and a No. 4 seed in the state tournament, while Leavenworth claimed a No. 3 seed.
Leavenworth drafted Granite Falls’ Bennett Knapper, Wabasso’s Adryen Tietz and Milroy’s Nathan Deutz to its state roster after the game while Lamberton drafted Sacred Heart’s Jack Howard, Stark’s Adam Sellner and Searles’ Casey Lux.
The Class C state tournament will begin on Friday with Lamberton taking on No. 8A Paynesville in Gaylord at 7:30 p.m. Leavenworth will take on No. 9B Randall in the first round in Gaylord on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Leavenworth’s go-ahead run crossed the plate in the second inning. Dylan Hillesheim singled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on an Alex Sellner single.
From there, Jackson Ludewig’s pitching took the Orioles home for the win. He pitched all nine innings for the Orioles, finishing with eight strikeouts while giving up one earned run on three hits and six walks.
Hudsen Jenniges pitched the first six innings for Lamberton, surrendering one earned and one unearned run on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts. In relief, Luke Willhite gave up one earned run on three hits over two innings of relief.
Lamberton’s lone run of the game came in the top of the eighth. Travis Willhite singled and walks to Luke Willhite and Neil Eichten loaded the bases with one out. Jenniges then reached on an error to drive in a run, but Leavenworth came up with consecutive fly outs to end the rally.
With Leavenworth holding a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth, Jevan Richert reached base on an error at third, advanced on a Jaden Mickelson single and scored on a Caden Evers sacrifice fly.
Leavenworth added one last insurance run in the eighth when Mickelson singled, advanced on a Hillesheim single and scored to make the score 3-1 on a Tony Zaleski single.
