Lamberton lives on in 2C tourney, eliminates Sleepy Eye
SPRINGFIELD — The Lamberton Long Sox stayed alive in the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday, defeating the Sleepy Eye Indians 4-1 in a win-or-go-home game at Riverside Park.
Quintyn Vold got the start on the mound for Lamberton and finished with the complete-game win. He allowed four hits and one walk for one unearned run while striking out seven.
Hudsen Jenniges led the Lamberton bats, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Will Carlson added a double.
Nick Mielke took the season-ending loss for Sleepy Eye, pitching eight innings and allowing six hits and no walks for four runs, two earned, while striking out two.
Matt Mielke was 2 for 3 to lead the Sleepy Eye bats.
Lamberton will play Springfield at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Springfield, with the winner earning a state berth from Region 2C. The loser of that game will see its season come to an end.
Sleepy Eye took the lead right away in the top of the first on a one-out fielder’s choice groundout by Cody Schultz that scored Matt Mielke, who led off the inning with a single.
The Long Sox tied it up in the bottom of the second when Hudsen Jenniges lined a single into center field to score Carlson, who had a one-out double.
Hudsen Jenniges popped out in the fourth, but it allowed Neil Eichten to score from third for a 2-1 Lamberton lead. Eichten reached on a leadoff error and was singled to second by Josh Altermatt.
The Long Sox wrapped up the scoring in the sixth for two runs. After a one-out single by Eichten, a fielder’s choice put Altermatt on and forced Eichten out at second. Carlson then hit a hard grounder to shortstop, which was misplayed for an error, allowing Eichten to score and Altermatt to advance to third.
A Hudsen Jenniges RBI single made it a 4-1 game.
Lamberton advanced to Sunday’s game with Sleepy Eye after defeating the Wabasso Jaxx 5-2 on Saturday, while Sleepy Eye defeated the Gibbon Reds 3-1 Saturday to earn a spot in Sunday’s game.
Lamberton’s win over Wabasso saw Isaac Jenniges lead the Lamberton bats by going 2 for 3. Eli Fest also had a 2-for-4 day at the plate for Lamberton against the Jaxx, which included an RBI, while Kyle Krzmarzick added a double and an RBI.
Fest got the complete-game win for Lamberton over Wabasso, allowing five hits and one walk for two runs, one earned, while striking out 12.
Joe Liebl took the loss for the Jaxx, allowing six hits and five walks for four runs, one earned, in six innings of work. He struck out six. He also led the Jaxx at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Sleepy Eye’s win over Gibbon saw Jake Mielke get the mound win in four innings, allowing three hits and a walk for no runs while striking out one. Matt Mielke was 2 for 3 in that game to lead Sleepy Eye.
Gibbon was led by Nolan Huiras, who was 2 for 4, while Dominic Rose was 2 for 5. Huiras also took the pitching loss in 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and a walk for two unearned runs while striking out three.
