New Ulm baseball teams ending summer strong
To say that summer baseball this year in New Ulm has been a success thus far may be an understatement.
On Saturday, both New Ulm Legion Gold and the New Ulm Junior Legion won DI Sub-State titles to advance to state tournament play.
Legion Gold, seeded fifth in the Sub-State 2 Tournament, downed Marshall 8-6 Saturday to earn a trip to the DI American Legion State Tournament on Thursday in St. Michael at 3 p.m. against Hastings, who defeated Eagan 5-2 Monday to win the Sub-State 6 Tournament.
They enter the tournament at 16-12.
That same day, the top-seeded New Ulm Junior Legion captured the Sub-Distrct G title by also defeating Marshall and advancing to the state tournament in Bloomington and will face Eden Prairie at 3:30 p.m.
They are currently 23-3 heading into tournament play.
And not to be forgotten, New Um VFW Silver also had a great season.
They posted a 19-7 record.
So between the Junior Legion and VFW Silver — both feeder systems for Legion Gold — they are 42-10 with the Junior Legion still playing.
Then add in the New Ulm Brewers, who are one of the top Class B teams in Minnesota and are 18-4, you have four teams with a combined record so far of 76-26 — a .745 winning percentage with two teams already in state tournament play and a third — the Brewers — more than likely also playing in the Class B state tournament.
And fans here can still see the Brewers play in the postseason here when New Ulm hosts the District 8B tournament in New Ulm starting on Aug. 2 at Johnson Park. They will play the winner of the Saturday, Aug. 2 Raymond-Luverne game on Sunday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m.
The top three teams in the 8B tourney advance to this year’s state tournament. The tournament’s championship game takes place on Aug. 9, while the game to determine the final second and third state qualifiers takes place on Aug. 10.
And next year New Ulm hosts the 2026 DI American Legion Baseball Tournament and as host team will qualify with what looks like a very strong team with players back from Gold and two strong feeder teams.
