Sunday area roundup: Silver reaches District 2 finals

New Ulm 5, Marshall 2

SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm VFW Silver defeated Marshall VFW Orange 5-2 on Sunday to advance to the District 2 VFW Baseball Tournament finals Monday.

Marshall ended up defeating Mankato American later on Sunday 8-7 to win the elimination bracket and move on to the finals Monday.

The finals take place at 5 p.m. Monday in Sleepy Eye, with Silver needing just one win to advance to the state tournament. A loss by Silver in the 5 p.m. game would trigger a second, deciding finals game at 7:30 p.m. Monday night.

Owen Castleman got the win on the mound for Silver, allowing three hits and three walks for two earned runs while striking out five. He also went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored at the plate, while Kaden Stueber led the Silver bats by going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Miles Castleman was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI also for Silver.

Rocco Rignell led Marshall at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Carson Mensink pitched six innings in the loss for Marshall, allowing eight hits and two walks for five runs, four earned, while striking out four.

JUNIOR LEGION

Sleepy Eye 10, Windom 3

LUVERNE — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion ran past Windom 10-3 on Sunday in the first round of the DII Southwest Sub-State Junior Legion Baseball Tournament.

The win moved Sleepy Eye on to play Springfield at 5 p.m. Monday in the second round.

Jacob Fulmer led Sleepy Eye at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a walk and a run scored, while Karter Haala was 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Jack Windschitl was 1 for 1 with two RBIs and a run scored also for Sleepy Eye, while Jaxon Saenz was 1 for 5 with two RBIs.

On the mound for Sleepy Eye, Carson Uecker got the win in five innings, allowing three hits and a walk for three runs, one earned, while striking out six. Landry Folkens and Chase Zufall each pitched a scoreless inning in relief, striking out two apiece.

Springfield 11, St. James 4

LUVERNE — Springfield Junior Legion Post 257 downed St. James 11-4 on Sunday in the first round of the DII Southwest Sub-State Junior Legion Baseball Tournament.

Elisandro Trevino led the Springfield bats, going 4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Ely Streich was 4 for 5 with an RBI. Madden Lendt was 2 for 3 with two walks and an RBI also for Springfield, while Ashtyn Rudolph was 2 for 4 and Eli Heglund was 2 for 5.

Streich got the win in 6 1/3 innings of work, allowing five hits and four walks for four runs, two earned, while striking out six.

Springfield advanced to a 5 p.m. Monday winners bracket game against Sleepy Eye with the win.

Adrian 3, Madelia 0

LUVERNE — Madelia Junior Legion Post 19 fell to Adrian Junior Legion Post 32 on Sunday 3-0 in the first round of the DII Southwest Sub-State Junior Legion Baseball Tournament.

Jonathan Makela had Madelia’s lone hit of the game off Adrian starter Matt Geister, who struck out 10 and allowed two walks in a complete game.

Jeremiah Garza got the start for Madelia on the mound, allowing one hit a walk while striking out three in one inning. Kolten Tande pitched the final six innings for Madelia and took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out six.

Madelia dropped to a 2 p.m. elimination bracket game Monday with the loss, while Adrian moved on to a winners bracket game Monday night.
