New Ulm Jr. Legion splits doubleheader

NEW ULM — New Ulm Junior Legion and Marshall Junior Legion split a junior legion doubleheader Tuesday at Mueller Park, with Marshall taking the first win 6-5 in eight innings and New Ulm winning 4-2 in the second game.
Despite outhitting Marshall 12 to seven in the first game, New Ulm couldn’t get the sweep. Marshall got an extra run due to two New Ulm errors to no Marshall errors, along with two additional hit batsmen.
Andrew Lee earned the win for Marshall in Game 1, pitching 5 1/3 innings in relief with five strikeouts and one earned run on four hits. Kael Frana made the start, allowing four runs on eight hits with one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings. At the plate for Marshall, Trae Bailey was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Noah Pieper was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Lee and Ethan Boeck each had an RBI.
Levi Hopp took the loss for New Ulm, striking out one and allowing one run on one hit in two innings. Candon Briggs pitched three innings, striking out and allowing one unearned run on three hits. At the plate, Josh Forstner was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Evan Blekestad was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Tanner Backer was 2 for 4, and Colin Forstner, Eli Anderson and Lane Ruch each had a hit and an RBI.
New Ulm drew first blood in the bottom of the opening frame, as a walk and steal from Alex Portner was capitalized on with a single from Anderson. Hopp and Colin Forstner each singled to follow up, bringing home Anderson for a 2-0 lead. Marshall was able to get out of the inning thanks to a successful pickoff from Frana.
Marshall got the offense going in the second inning, starting with a single from Peiper, then an RBI triple from Bailey. Two hit batsmen loaded the bases for Lee, who grounded into a fielder’s choice to score a run. Ethan Weedman singled to score the runner and give Marshall a 3-2 lead, then Boeck hit a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead before the inning was over.
New Ulm was able to tie the game up in the bottom of the third, with a single from Blekestad leading to an RBI double from Josh Forstner. Colin Forstner walked to put runners on the corners, then Ruch singled to score Josh Forstner. Another single by Landon Kapolczinski loaded the bases for New Ulm, but Lee coaxed a grounder for the final out of the inning.
Marshall retook the lead in the fourth with an error put into play by Boeck scoring Noah Frazee, but New Ulm tied it up once again in the bottom of the inning, with a single by Josh Forstner bringing home Blekestad. Tied after seven, Marshall went up to bat in the top of the eighth. Bailey doubled with one out in the inning to put a runner in scoring position, then Bailey brought him home on a groundout. New Ulm go a runner on third in Ruch, but as Levi Hopp put a line drive into left field, the relay home beat a tagging Ruch as he was tagged out by Marshall catcher Jackson Sirovy.
Hunter Larson earned the win for New Ulm in Game 2, pitching seven innings while allowing two unearned runs on six hits. At the plate, Portner was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, while Ryan Rathmann had a hit and two RBIs. Kapolczinski added a hit and an RBI, while Colin Forstner had a hit and a run scored.
Bailey took the loss for Marshall, striking out four while allowing three earned runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. At the plate, Frana was 2 for 3, while Tyler Kraft had a hit and a run scored. Bailey had an RBI.
Marshall scored in the first with a sacrifice fly from Bailey, but New Ulm scored two runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a groundout from Rathmann and a single from Josh Forstner. New Ulm scored again in the second with a single from Kapolczinski, then again in the sixth with a single from Rathmann. Marshall managed one more run in the seventh as Kraft scored on a wild pitch, but a flyout ended the inning and the game.
New Ulm hosts Montevideo in a doubleheader on Wednesday, while Marshall plays a doubleheader against Willmar VFW on Thursday.
