Madelia Jr. Legion earns Sub-State berth
ST. JAMES — The Madelia Junior Legion baseball team earned a spot in this year’s DII Junior Legion Southwest Sub-State Tournament after Monday’s Sub-Sub-State District C tourney in St. James.
After Madelia defeated Minnesota Lake/Maple River 7-5 to earn a sub-state berth, they ended the day with a 2-0 win over St. James behind a no-hitter from Zach Jacobs. The win over St. James forces a second sub-sub state finals game Tuesday night. St. James will play Madelia at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the top seed in the C-pod. The loser will get the No. 2 seed, while MN Lake/Maple River finishes as the third seed. All three teams will play in the Southwest Sub-State tourney, which begins Thursday in Luverne.
In the win over MN Lake/Maple River, Madelia held off a comeback to take the win. It started with a 7-0 lead before MN Lake/Maple River scored two in the fourth and three in the seventh to keep it interesting.
Noel Davila led Madelia at the plate in that game, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored, while Jonathan Makela was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Kolten Tande was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Jackson Martinez was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs also for Madelia. Jeremiah Garza got the win in five innings, allowing one hit and seven walks for two earned runs while striking out eight.
In the win over St. James, Jacobs walked just two in his complete-game no-no and struck out 11. At the plate, Jacobs helped himself by going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
