Legion Gold falls short in 29-run game

NEW ULM — New Ulm Legion Gold scored 12 runs in a continuation of a legion baseball game against Hutchinson, but that wasn’t enough as Hutchinson won 17-12 in 10 innings.
Four of Hutchinson’s runs were scored on July 7 at Johnson Park before the game was suspended due to weather. The teams had decided to play nine innings after the continuation, but a tie game forced one extra inning, where Hutchinson scored six runs to New Ulm’s one.
Caleb Forstner took the loss for New Ulm, striking out one and allowing six unearned runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Kolton Achman pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out one and allowing 11 runs, five earned, on eight hits. At the plate, Dirk Haynes was 3 for 6 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Ben Alfred was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Colin Anderson had a hit, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Evan Thompson and Parker Neubauer had hit, an RBI and two runs scored. Forstner had a hit and two runs scored, and Zach Hubbard and Kyle Albrecht had a hit and a run scored.
As Hutchinson started the day up 4-0 after three innings, New Ulm scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. New Ulm rattled off five consecutive hits, including four extra-base hits, to lead off the inning. Alfred started things off with a triple, then Haynes, Thompson and Neubauer all hit doubles to score runs. Albrecht singled to put runners at the corners, and Forstner walked to load the bases. Colin Anderson hit the fifth extra-base hit with a triple to clear the bases. Finally, Anderson scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-4 lead.
New Ulm scored again in the bottom of the fifth, with Neubauer reaching and scoring on two separate errors. Hutchinson got the offense going again in the sixth with a seven-run inning of its own, collecting five hits with an error in the frame to retake a 11-8 lead.
Forstner led off the eighth inning with a single, followed by a walk by Hubbard. A fielder’s choice put into play by Anderson put runners on the corners, then Anderson advanced to second on a groundout. Alfred was able to capitalize on the runners on scoring position with a double to cut the lead to one. A single from Haynes scored Alfred to tie the game at 11.
Neither team scored in the ninth inning, sending the game into the 10th. Hutchinson took advantage of two errors and four hits to score six runs and take a 17-11 lead. Hubbard was able to triple to lead off the bottom of the inning and came home on an errant throwdown by the catcher, but New Ulm was unable to muster another hit to lose in extra innings.
New Ulm plays at Northfield on Tuesday.
