MANKATO — New Ulm Legion Gold got back on the right track at the plate during a doubleheader against Mankato National and Mankato American on Tuesday, but it failed to convert that improvement into a win as it fell 6-5 to National and 11-1 in five innings to American.
After posting four hits across its last two games, New Ulm collected nine hits in the doubleheader. However, Gold’s losing streak extended to five game, with its next chance to get in the win column coming on Wednesday at home against Sleepy Eye Post 7.
Cohen Domeier took the loss in the game against National, striking out one and allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits in three innings. Cullen Slette made the start, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings. At the plate, Dirk Haynes was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Colin Anderson and Zach Hubbard each had a hit and an RBI. Jake Finstad had a hit and a run scored.
Both teams put two runs on the board in the first inning. New Ulm got its runs on a single from Hubbard that brought home Finstad and on a grounder put into play by Kyle Albrecht that scored Anderson. The teams once again matched scores in the second, bringing the tie to 3-3 as Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Parker Neubauer.
National finally broke the stalemate in the fourth inning, getting a run across to take a 4-3 lead. It took New Ulm until the top of the seventh inning to respond, tying the game once more on a suicide squeeze from Haynes to bring home Albrecht, then a fielder’s choice put into play by Neubauer scored Ben Alfred to take a 5-4 lead.

However, the lead didn’t last long as a single by National scored two runs to walk off the game.
Hubbard took the loss in the game against American, striking out two and allowing eight runs, four earned, on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. At the plate, Finstad, Alfred and Albrecht picked up hits, with Albrecht earning an RBI and Alfred scoring a run.
After two scoreless innings to open the game, American got on the board in the third inning with one run. New Ulm tied the game up in the top of the fourth as Alfred doubled and took third on a fielder’s choice put into play by Logan Mielke, then came home on a single from Albrecht.
The New Ulm defense faltered in the bottom of the inning, however, allowing eight runs on five hits, an error and four walks as American blew the game wide open. Two more runs in the bottom of the fifth sealed the five-inning loss for New Ulm.
Gold will host Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday back home at Johnson Park.
