Weekend area roundup: Jr. Gold stay hot, topple Loyola

MANKATO — The No. 1-ranked New Ulm Junior Legion Gold baseball team earned its seventh win in a row this summer with a 15-4 win over Mankato Loyola on Sunday in a junior legion baseball game.

Junior Gold (12-1) was led by Josh Forstner, who went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, while Candon Briggs was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Levi Hopp also was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Junior Gold, while Hunter Larson was 2 for 3, Mitchell Hopp was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Landon Kapolczinski had a double.

Junior Gold was able to put six pitchers on the mound in the blowout, with Mitchell Hopp getting the most work in as he pitched two innings and allowed one hit and two walks for one run while striking out two. Alex Portner, Tanner Backer, Briggs, Larson and Forstner each pitched an inning also for New Ulm. Briggs earned the win, allowing one hit while striking out one.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion went 1-1 Saturday in a Sioux Falls junior legion baseball tournament, falling to Lincoln, Nebraska 9-4 before beating Minneapolis Southwest 6-4.

Sleepy Eye (7-6) advanced to a second place cross-bracket game Sunday, but that game and the remaining games were rained out.

In the loss to Lincoln on Saturday, Chase Zufall was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Sleepy Eye. Gavin Fischer homered, while Carson Uecker tripled.

In the win over Minneapolis SW, Uecker was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Karter Haala was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Haala also got the complete-game win, allowing nine hits for one earned run while striking out one.

Madelia 13, Hutchinson 6

SEARLES — Madelia Junior Legion downed Hutchinson 13-6 on Sunday night in a junior legion baseball game.

Brayden Grev was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs to lead Madelia (3-8), while Miah Garza was 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Kolten Tande also was 1 for 1 with three walks and three runs scored for Madelia.

Jonathan Makela got the win in 5 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing five hits and six walks for two earned runs while striking out five.

MANKATO — New Ulm VFW Silver split a VFW baseball doubleheader on Saturday with Mankato East, dropping the opener 9-5 and winning the second game 6-3.

In the Game 1 loss, Owen Castleman got the start and no decision in four innings on the mound, allowing our hits and three walks for four runs while striking out 10. Paxton Johnson was 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Owen Castleman had a double.

In the Game 2 win, Ryler Collins went all seven innings on the mound for Silver, allowing nine hits and no walks for two earned runs while striking out five. Leading Silver at the plate, Johnson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Owen Castleman was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Miles Castleman was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
