NEW ULM — It was a walk-off walk for a win.
Zach Hubbard’s bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Jake Finstad from third and gave New Ulm Legion Gold a 2-1 win over the West Fargo Vets Friday night at Johnson Park in the Upper Midwest Classic Tournament.
Finstad got the mound win for Gold, now 2-0 in the UMC. Finstad allowed one run on two hits — both the lone run and the two hits coming in West Fargo’s second inning — and struck out seven.
Bryce Nelson took the loss for West Fargo (1-1 in UMC) in the relief.
“This was a fun game,” Gold head coach Curt Forbrook said. “We had some quality at-bats at the end and some clutch hits.”
West Fargo grabbed a 1-0 lead on Finstad and Gold in the top of the second inning. Singles from Aiden Bjone and Gavin Bjur and a sacrifice bunt from Parker Connell preceded a Jacob Scholand sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
That lead held up for Vet starter Parker Rolfson until the bottom of the sixth when Gold finally dented him.
Hubbard rapped a one-out double down the right-field line before consecutive walks to Caleb Forstner and Parker Neubauer loaded the bases.
Dirk Haynes groundout to second plated Hubbard to tie the game a 1-1.
New Um then mounted their game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Finstad led off against Nelson with a single to center.
Kyle Albrecht’s sacrifice bunt moved Finstad into scoring position.
Elliot Schabert — who had two hits in the game — was intentionally walked.
Nelson then plunked Logan Mielke to load the bases where Hubbard coaxed the game-winning free pass.
“We just did a lot of things right at the end,” Forbrook said. “We survived our (four) errors in the game. And Jake — I am glad he is on our team — he had a great night. And now we are 2-0.”
Gold now plays Springfield, Nebraska, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Johnson Park.
