Indians hold off A’s in TEL play

ST. JAMES — The Sleepy Eye Indians took advantage of a few St. James Athletics errors on Wednesday night and held on for a 6-3 win in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

Jacob Fulmer led Sleepy Eye at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.

David Bradley, Bransen Petersen and Chase Bottin each had a double for the A’s, while Max Svalland was 2 for 4.

The Indians got two runs in the first after a two-out error was followed by a walk to Owen Weiss and a two-run single by Luke Mielke. St. James got a run back in the third when Lucas Anderson came home on a Sleepy Eye error, but the Indians got that run back in the fifth after Jake Mielke reached on a catcher’s interference and was brought home on a single by Matt Mielke.

Fulmer singled in another run for Sleepy Eye in the sixth.

In the seventh, Matt Mielke reached on an error with one out before Weiss and Luke Mielke were hit by pitches to load the bases for Fulmer, who doubled in two more Sleepy Eye runs for a 6-1 lead.

The A’s got a run back in the eighth on an RBI double from Bradley and another in the ninth on a strikeout and passed ball that scored Bottin, who doubled to lead off and took third on a passed ball.

Luke Mielke got the win for Sleepy Eye in 8 1/3 innings, throwing 125 pitches. He allowed eight hits and four walks for three runs, one earned, while striking out eight. Jake Mielke recorded the final two outs in relief for the save, the final on a strikeout with two on base.

Connor Jones took the loss for St. James on the mound in six innings, allowing four hits and four walks for four runs, one earned, while striking out five. Dylan Grev pitched in relief for the A’s and struck out seven while allowing two hits and no walks for two unearned runs in three innings.

Sleepy Eye is now 6-2 in the TEL, while St. James is 3-5. Both teams play another TEL game Sunday, Sleepy Eye in Lamberton and St. James at home against Essig.
