Becker’s dazzles in debut, gives Brewers shutout

NEW ULM — Tate Becker had an impressive first start in his amateur baseball career Sunday for the New Ulm Brewers.

He got his first amateur pitching win and also got his first amateur hit.

Becker allowed just one hit — a leadoff single to Gibbon’s Devon Schwarzrock in the fifth — and struck out 15 as the Brewers topped Gibbon 17-0 in a Tomahawk East League game at Johnson Park.

The game was stopped in the seventh inning because of the 10-run lead rule.

Becker issued six walks and threw 109 pitches. He also added a two-run triple in a nine-run Brewers fourth inning as New Ulm improved to 4-3 in the TEL.

Wade Werner took the loss for the Reds, now 3-3 in the TEL. He went 2 1/3 innings and was charged with eight runs.

Josh Seidl led a 12-hit Brewers attack with three hits. Cole Ranweiler, Sam Keckeisen and Lucas Suess each added two hits.

Ranweiler, Ayden Jensen and Keckeisen each drove in three runs, with two of Keckeisen’s coming on a two-run home run in that fourth inning.

But the story of the game was Becker’s mound performance as he struck out the first batter he faced — Jason Berger — and never looked back.

“This was not what I expected, but I did expect to throw pretty good,” Becker said. “I was nervous in the first inning, but after the first strikeout I settled in and felt pretty good.”

The Brewers, who host Searles at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Park in a TEL game, jumped on the veteran right-handed Werner for two runs in the bottom of the first.

Justin Hoffmann walked and Cole Ranweiler followed with a double. A wild pitch scored Hoffmann and a Jensen groundout made it 2-0.

New Ulm pushed across three runs in the second inning. Singles from Seidl and Suess and a walk to Andrew Peters loaded the bases. Hoffmann was hit by a pitch to bring in Seidl. A Ranweiler base hit plated Peters and a Jensen sacrifice fly made it a 5-0 contest.

Three more runs came across for the Brewers in the third on just one hit — that being a Seidl single. But the Brewers took advantage of three walks, a hit batter and a fielder’s choice for an 8-0 lead.

The Brewers then sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth to add nine more runs to their score on seven hits.

Two of the runs came off of a Keckeisen home run over the fence in right and two came in on a Becker two-run triple to the gap in right-center.

“That felt pretty good,” Becker said.

“That was my first hit of the year, too, so I had a pretty good game today. I felt pretty good.”

Becker then struck out the side in the top of the seventh.
