NEW ULM — Albert Lea ended the New Ulm Eagles’ baseball season Wednesday afternoon at Mueller Park with an 8-3 win in a Section 2AAA elimination game at Mueller Park.
Logan Davis got the win for the Tigers. He allowed six hits and struck out seven.
Mitchell Hopp took the loss for the Eagles, who finish the season at 15-9. He went 3 1/3 innings and was charged with six runs on four hits. He fanned four but issued three walks and hit two Tigers batters.
Cooper Kermes had two hits for the Tigers. Nate Barclay drove in two runs for Albert Lea.
Cohen Domeier and Zach Hubbard each had two hits for the Eagles.
Both teams had six hits in the game.
“We gave them too many free bases, had to many errors,” New Ulm head coach Mike Anderson said “We gave them five runs, free bases and errors.”
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Davis drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Easton Schewe. He came home on a one-out double from Andrew Westeng.
New Ulm plated two runs in the top of the third when Domeier legged out an infield single and scored on a Hubbard triple to center field.
Hubbard then trotted home when Kyle Albrecht followed up Hubbard’s triple with an RBI single.
But that lead was short-lived. Kermes led off the bottom of the third by reaching on an Eagles infield throwing error. After Hopp fanned Layton Yost, he issued a walk to Barclay. Hopp then recorded his fourth strikeout of the game before consecutive RBI singles from Graham Goskeson and Davis gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Albert Lea increased the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth with three more runs.
A fielder’s choice, a Kermes single and a hit batsman were followed up by two wild pitches — one that brought in a run — and a hit batsman that ended Hopp’s day on the mound.
Kolton Achman took over and was greeted by a Barclay two-run single for a 6-2 lead.
A Domeier leadoff single in the top of the fifth resulted in a run when Domeier scored on a Tanner Backer sacrifice fly for the Eagles’ final run of the game and the season.
Albert Lea added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
“We gave them three leadoff walks or hit batters,” Anderson said “And all three of them scored. But I am super proud of how we battled and proud of our entire season. When I put things in perspective, we were 6-13 and this year we went 15-9. The future is bright for us — we started eight underclassmen today and the underclassmen that are not starting are pushing for starting spots.”
