NEW ULM — The New Ulm Eagles baseball lived to play another day Saturday in the Section 2AAA baseball elimination bracket with a pair of wins at Johnson Park.

First the Eagles blanked Jordan 10-0 in five innings before edging St. Peter 9-6 to move on to another elimination game scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Park against No. 5-seeded Albert Lea, who upset third-seeded Marshall 9-1.

New Ulm head coach Mike Anderson was pleased with his team’s offensive performance in both contests.

“We hit the ball, we took quality at-bats and we faced adversity in the second game,” he said. “And we had two really good pitching performances today.”

In the first game, junior Candon Briggs held the Hubmen to just two hits and fanned five in the game shortened contest.

Kyle Albrecht and Dirk Haynes each had two of the eight New Ulm hits in the game. Albrecht, Haynes and Levi Hopp each drove in two runs.

The Eagles jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning off of Jordan starter and losing pitcher Michael Thrune. Zach Hubbard was hit by a pitch before Albrecht doubled him home. Thrune walked Tanner Backer before he plunked Haynes to end his pitching day. Reliever Griffin Dahmen was greeted by a two-run single from Hopp before two more Eagles runners came home on an infield error.

The Eagles plated two more runs in the third on a Ben Alfred sacrifice fly and another error.

A three-run fourth inning made it 10-0. An Albecht single and a Haynes double closed out the scoring.

In the win over St. Peter, left-hander Tanner Backer picked up the win as he scattered four hits and fanned five in the 9-6 win. Three New Ulm errors in the first two innings led directly to the first five Saints runs.

Zach Hubbard and Backer each had two hits, with Hubbard’s hits being a double and triple.

Owen Potts took the loss for the Saints.

Both teams scored a run in the first, with the Eagles scoring when Hubbard led off with a triple and scored on a Backer single.

New Ulm took a 5-1 lead in the top of the second when Alfred walked and Cohen Domeier reached on an error. A Hubbard double scored Alfred. Backer was intentionally walked with two out.

A Haynes single and ensuing outfield error allowed three runs to score.

New Ulm returned the favor in the bottom of the inning as St. Peter also scored four runs thanks to three hits and two New Ulm errors.

A Ryan Rathmann RBI single in the third moved New Ulm into a 6-5 lead and a Hopp single made it 7-5 in the fourth.

Domeier’s two-run single in the fifth made it a 9-5 game.

New Ulm is now 15-8 on the season.
