GIBBON — In a game that featured six home runs, the Courtland Cubs powered past the Gibbon Reds 12-6 on Sunday in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.
The Cubs scored one run in the first and two in the third inning, only to see their lead evaporate. Josh Wasmund of the Reds hit a solo home run in the second and then Gibbon took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning on RBI hits by Dominic Rose and Aaron Bruns.
Starting in the sixth inning, Courtland proved the theory that history repeats itself with three consecutive lead-off home runs in three straight innings. Teagan Kamm led off the sixth with a solo homer. Cade Bushard singled and scored later on Nolan Drill’s double.
In the seventh, player-manager Chase Meyer homered, with the singling Maddox Mortensen also scoring. Nolan Drill got his round-tripper to lead off the eighth to make the score 8-5. Then in the ninth the Cubs put up four more runs, the big blast being a three-run home run by lefty Teddy Giefer over the right-field fence.
Gibbon added one more run in the bottom of ninth on a solo homer by Brendan Kienlen. Kienlen had two of Gibbon’s six hits.
Teddy Giefer came on in relief of Josh Giefer in the fifth inning and picked up the win for Courtland. Teddy pitched four innings of hitless ball. Ansen Dulas pitched the ninth inning. The Cubs pitchers struck out 14 Gibbon batters, walked eight and hit one batter.
Gibbon used three pitchers, Dominic Rose, Nolan Huiras and Sam Berkner. They combined to give up 17 Cubs hits, struck out seven, walked two and hit four batters. Drill and Teddy Giefer each had three hits for the Cubs, with Nick Johnson, Meyer, Mortensen, Kamm, and Bushard getting two hits apiece.
In their next two games, the Courtland Cubs will take on two other teams that played in the 2024 Class C State tournament. On Friday, May 23, they play at Hanska at 7:30 p.m. Both teams are 2-0. Then on Memorial Day, May 26, Courtland will have its home opener and host Springfield for a 3 p.m. contest.
