Brewers hold off Longhorns

NEW ULM — Going into the top of the ninth inning in their Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game Sunday, the Stark Longhorns trailed the New Ulm Brewers 6-4.

And when Brewers reliever Logan Mielke walked Brandon Helget to lead off the ninth and then plunked Arian Saenz with no outs, it gave the Longhorns, who had lost their first game in the Tomahawk East League, some hope.

And when the right-handed Mielke hit Dyan Klein with one out to load the bases, Stark had its opportunity.

But Mielke would coax an infield popout and then a ground ball to end the game and earn the save as the Brewers improved to 2-0 in the TEL with a 6-4 win over the Longhorns at Johnson Park.

Sam Keckeisen got the pitching win. Keckeisen went six innings and was charged with one run while striking out two.

Adam Sellner took the loss for Stark, going two innings and allowing three runs.

Klein had three hits for the Longhorns, who outhit the Brewers 8-7 in the game.

Colton Schaefer had two hits for the Brewers, with Trevor Nissen adding a double and three RBIs.

The Brewers, who host St. James Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Johnson Park, grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Schaefer and Justin Hoffmann singled. Andrew Peters drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.

Sellner struck out the next two batters before Nissen laced a three-run double down the left-field line.

The Longhorns, who host Gibbon Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., cut the lead to 3-1 in the third.

Nick Labat reached on a fielder’s choice before Brandon Helget singled. Saenz, who reached base on all five of his plate appearances in the game, followed with a single to left and an ensuing error on the play allowed Labat to race home.

The Brewers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth without a hit, using a walk, a stolen base, a flyout and a passed ball for a 4-1 lead.

A Zach More RBI single in the sixth made it a 5-1 lead.

But Stark pushed three runs across in the eighth inning. RBI singles from Klein and David Suprenant and an error cut the lead to 5-4.

The Brewers then scored a big insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Schaefer single.

Starting at $4.50/week.
