SANBORN — After shaking off some early rust Monday, Sleepy Eye United’s Sam Price calmly dialed in on her final nine as she took home the first-ever Tomahawk-Valley Conference Girls Golf Tournament individual championship at the Farmer’s Golf & Health Club.
Price shot an 87 Monday, giving her a first-place finish in the third and final leg of the tournament and her third consecutive first-place finish in the tournament overall.
Price had just two pars to go with two double bogeys and four bogeys in her first nine on Monday, but she had four pars and five bogeys on her final nine to recover and pull away from the competition.
“I just think playing my own game was the biggest part,” Price said. “Being more consistent and having a stronger back nine.”
While gusty wind caused some issues, it also helped keep the competitors cool as Sanborn temperatures passed 90 degrees in the early afternoon and eventually registered a high of 95.7 degrees.

“The wind definitely effected some shots, but it was the nice breeze that helps me physically,” Price said.
Price’s first-place finish gave her 119.5 points for the tournament, with Monday’s tournament points being worth double. Her big day also led the SEU girls to the team championship also as they shot a final-leg score of 398 to finish the tournament with 40 points.
The SEU girls won a share of the Tomahawk title in 2022 before finishing as solo champions in 2023 and 2024. This year with the merger of the Valley Conference, the SEU girls have a new streak they can work to build on as Tomahawk-Valley Conference champs.
Price was the Tomahawk Conference champion two years ago and co-champion last year.
Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann gave Price her toughest competition throughout the tournament and led the third leg through the first nine. Price then took the lead on Hole 3 in her second nine at the nine-hole course before creating more distance the rest of the way. Winkelmann tied with Price in the opening leg of the tournament on April 21 in Alden and tied for third in Leg 2 in Springfield last week.

Winkelmann finished second Monday with a 92, giving her a tournament point total of 115.
“I think my front nine pretty well,” Winkelmann said. “There were a few holes I struggled on my back nine, but for the most part I kept it together. Overall I think it went good.”
Winkelmann said her approach shots helped her out Monday and she felt good about her place in the tournament as just a freshman.
“I feel great,” Winkelmann said. “There’s still a lot of learning to do, especially with just the whole game in general. I think I have time to learn, every day’s a learning experience, so I’m excited.”
SEU got some extra help Monday from its senior Chloe Walter, who shot a 96 to tie for fifth with Springfield freshman Ava Lipetzky.
Walter said helping the team take first in the new Tomahawk-Valley tourney was a good feeling, with the added teams being a welcome addition.
“I like it,” she said. “Alden-Conger’s good, Springfield’s good and we’re pretty good. It’s kind of a battle between us three and we’ve consistently won all three of the conference tournaments we’ve had [this year], but I like it because it’s more competition compared to just an easy run. I do like that there’s more people from more areas so you can make more friends from a bunch of different places and we get to see cooler courses. Like Alden-Conger’s course [Oak View], he had never golfed there before and we went there.”
Price echoed those thoughts and said it felt good to win the first Tomahawk-Valley tournament.
“I liked the merger,” Price said. “I think having more girls golfers to play against is fun. Bigger competition, so it feels good to win first year.”
Walter said that her short game played a role in her solid Monday score.
“I made a comeback by parring, I parred three holes and it was a lot of one chip, one putt,” Walter said. “So a lot of my short game and then when I’m in trouble, getting out of it right away. That’s something I didn’t do on the first nine that I went through.”
The Springfield girls finished second on Monday with a 420, followed by Alden-Conger (421), Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (461), Madelia (461), Martin County West (470), Cedar Mountain (472), Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther (479) and Wabasso (500). New Ulm Cathedral and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart were incomplete.
Finishing the tournament second behind SEU was Springfield with 36 points, while Alden-Conger took third (32), Madelia took fourth (24), MCW and GFW tied for fifth (20), Cedar Mountain took seventh (17) and GHEC/T/ML took eighth (14). Cathedral took ninth (8), Wabasso took 10th (7) and BLHS was incomplete.
Alden-Conger’s Kayla Halvorsen shot a 95 to tie for third with teammate Courtney Bakkedahl on Monday, while SEU’s Kiara Murphy carded a 102 to tie with Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann. Taking ninth on Monday with a 106 with BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht (106), while GFW’s Anika Lee and Madelia’s Katie Bocock tied for 10th with a 107. Tying for 12th Monday with a 108 was MCW’s Morgan McCorkell and Cedar Mountain’s Bailey Woodford (108), while GHEC/T/ML’s Charlotte Berhow carded a 109 for 14th. Madelia’s Katherine DeVlaeminck shot a 110 to tie with teammate Genesis Robles for 17th, while SEU’s Ella Pollard carded a 113 for 17th. Springfield’s Annie Kuehn, GFW’s Abigail Willegal and MCW’s Brenna Heifner shot 114s to tie for 18th Monday.
