FAIRFAX — Getting two hits apiece from the Bastian brothers, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop was able to earn a 10-5 win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday in a Tomahawk Division baseball game at Memorial Park.
The Thunderbirds outhit St. Mary’s 10-4 in the game.
Leading 3-0 after three innings, GFW put a four-run fourth inning together to lead 7-0. In the inning, Layton Uecker-Hamre singled in a run to start the scoring before Kaden Rieke added a sac fly ro make it 5-0. Luke Bastian had a sac fly of his own before his brother Will Bastian singled in a run for the 7-0 GFW lead.
Wyatt Pollard scored the first run of the game for St. Mary’s in the fifth on a wild pitch and two more St. Mary’s runs scored in the sixth on an error. GFW got four more runs in the sixth, one on a fielder’s choice groundout by Will Bastian and another on a groundout by Matthew Lee, to take a 10-3 lead. The Knights got two runs back in the seventh on a fielder’s choice groundout by Michael Balko and a passed ball, but GFW reliever Owen Swenson forced a pop out to end the game.
Will Bastian was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Thunderbirds, while Luke Bastian was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Uecker-Hamre was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while Swenson tripled and scored three runs.
Rieke pitched 5 2/3 innings in the win, allowing three hits and four walks for three runs, no earned runs, while striking out one. Swenson pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed a hit and two walks for one earned run.
Kessler Severson led the Knights at the plate with a double, while Tyler Mathiowetz was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Tyler Mathiowetz took the loss in five innings pitched, allowing nine hits and two walks for six earned runs while striking out four. Pollard pitched an inning of relief and allowed a hit and an unearned run.
GFW (4-11, 2-8) hosts Sibley East on Monday, while St. Mary’s (8-9, 7-5) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Monday.
MVL 8, Sleepy Eye 4
SLEEPY EYE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran topped Sleepy Eye 8-4 Friday in a nonconference baseball game.
Rogan Scriver led MVL at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored, while Josh Carlovsky was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two walks. Josh Vander Plas was 2 for 3 with three RBIs also for MVL, while Blake Sexton was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, Brennan Bendix was 2 for 5 with an RBI and Kaden Peterson had an RBI double.
Peterson got the win on the mound, going six innings and allowing eight hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out eight. Jacob Kramer pitched the seventh and allowed two walks for one unearned run while striking out one.
Sleepy Eye was led by Carson Uecker, who was 1 for 2 with two RBIs, while Landon Wendinger doubled.
Damian Sanchez took the loss in five innings of work, allowing nine hits and three walks for five earned runs while striking out three. Gavin Strong pitched two innings in relief, allowing three hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out one.
MVL (8-6) takes on New Ulm Cathedral next at 5 p.m. at Johnson Park, while Sleepy Eye is at Mankato Loyola Monday night.

PLATO — Wabasso split a Tomahawk Division baseball doubleheader on Friday, winning 5-2 and falling 15-5 to Lester Prairie.
Jack Burns earned the win for Wabasso in Game 1, striking out eight while allowing two runs on six hits in six innings. At the plate, Drew Kemp and Cason Olson each had two hits and an RBI, while Bruns had a triple and three RBIs.
Zach Skoblik took the loss in Game 2, striking out three while allowing six runs on four hits. At the plate, Bruns had three hits and an RBI, while Kemp had a hit and an RBI and Jayden Remiger had a double.
Wabasso (4-11, 2-10) hosts Minneota on Monday.

BELLE PLAINE — Belle Plaine defeated Sibley East 7-5 in a nonconference baseball game on Thursday.
Quintin DeVlaeminck took the loss for Sibley East, striking out two while allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk in two innings. Ben Friedrichs pitched four innings, striking out three and allowing no earned runs on three hits and two walks.
At the plate for the Wolverines, Caden Willmsen had a triple with two RBIs and a run scored, while Evan Pautsch and Carson Schmidt each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

WABASSO — Wabasso and Lester Prairie split a Tomahawk Division doubleheader on Friday, with Lester Prairie taking the first game 3-2 and Wabasso winning 11-7 in the second.
Aylah Jenniges took the loss in Game 1, striking out four while allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks in seven innings. At the plate for Wabasso, Audrey Johnson had a hit and two runs scored, while Macy Rohlik and Sara Carlson each had RBIs.
Delaina Eis earned the win in Game 2 for Wabasso, striking out two while allowing no runs on no hits and one walk in two innings pitched. Aylah Jenniges pitched five innings, allowing six earned runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. At the plate for the Rabbits, Rohlik was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Kayleigha Johnson was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Eis was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Peyton Jenniges was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Wabasso (10-4, 7-4) hosts an invitational on Saturday.

SEARLES — Madelia fell to United South Central 15-0 in four innings on Friday in a nonconference softball game.
Addie Odegard took the loss in the circle for Madelia in four innings, allowing 14 hits and four walks four 11 earned runs while striking out four. USC held Madelia off base in all four innings.
Madelia (4-14) is at Cleveland on Saturday.

FAIRFAX — The Cedar Mountain boys golf team edged New Ulm Cathedral 190-192 in a Tomahawk Division boys golf meet on Friday at the Mayflower Golf Club.
The Cathedral girls beat the Cedar Mountain girls 235-250.
Cathedral’s Owen Strei was the boys medalist with a 40, while Cedar Mountain’s Carson Schiller shot a 43 for second and Thomas Dahmes carded a 46 for third. Cathedral’s Carter Wilson shot a 40 also to tie for third with Dahmes, while Cedar Mountain’s Owen Dittbenner shot a 48 to take fifth.
Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann was the girls medalist with a 48, while Cedar Mountain’s Bailey Woodford took second with a 54. Cathedral’s Chloe Gilles shot a 59 for third, while Cedar Mountain’s Claire Sherman shot a 60 for fourth and Cathedral’s Elissa Ries carded a 61 for fifth.

BUFFALO LAKE — New Ulm Cathedral swept both sides of a Tomahawk Division golf meet on Thursday, with the boys team scoring a 170 and the girls scoring a 248.
The Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart boys scored a 200, while Wabasso finished with a 226. The Wabasso girls scored a 266, while the BLHS girls were incomplete.
Cathedral’s Owen Strei was the medalist for the boys, scoring a 34. He was followed by Cathedral’s Will Marti (42), BLHS’s Evan Peirce (45), Cathedral’s Joe Gillis (46), BLHS’s Carson Hickle and Cathedral’s Mason Wilmes and Andrew Bentler (48) and Wabasso’s Brayden Guetter (49).
BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht won the girls meet with a 50, followed by Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann (58), Wabasso’s Allison Jordan and Cathedral’s Elissa Ries (59), Cathedral’s Chloe Gilles (60), Wabasso’s Josie Wiese (62) and Wabasso’s Alexis Jensen (59).
