Area roundup: Cathedral sweeps season series with Sleepy Eye

Sleepy Eye 1

SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Sleepy Eye 10-1 on Monday in a Tomahawk Division softball game, sweeping the regular season series.

Cathedral (11-2, 9-1) started Jayde Altermatt in the circle and got six innings from her as she allowed five walks and one hit for one earned run while striking out 10. Abbey Hillesheim pitched the final inning for the Greyhounds, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Hillesheim led the Greyhounds at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and two walks, while Jaylin Hartness was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a walk. Margo Finstad added a double and two runs scored.

Taylor Berkner took the loss for Sleepy Eye (10-3, 8-3) in seven innings, allowing nine hits and seven walks while striking out nine. Paige Haala homered in the third inning and drew two walks to lead Sleepy Eye at the plate. Alex Confer had Sleepy Eye’s other hit in the seventh.

Cathedral hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart for a Tomahawk doubleheader on Tuesday, while Sleepy Eye hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a Tomahawk doubleheader Thursday.

Mankato West 7,

New Ulm 3

MANKATO — Mankato West handed New Ulm its second consecutive loss this season with a 7-3 win on Monday in a nonconference softball game.

Errors hurt the Eagles and starting pitcher Ramsey Hopp, who allowed six hits and a walk for just one earned run. She also struck out three in six innings. Berkley Wilfahrt was 2 for 3 with stolen bases for New Ulm at the plate, while Mya Hornick was 2 for 3 and Kenzie Enter was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Maddie Backer and Bridgette Roiger also each had a hit for New Ulm.

The Eagles (7-2) will look to rebound when they host Belle Plaine at 5:30 p.m. in a Big South Conference softball game.

Wabasso 16,

GFW 2 (5 innings)

WINTHROP — Wabasso cruised by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 16-2 in five innings in a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Monday.

Aylah Jenniges earned the win for Wabasso, striking out six while allowing two runs on two hits and one walk. At the plate for the Rabbits, Audrey Johnson was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Camryn Irlbeck was 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run scored. Jenniges had two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Sara Carlson had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Ellison Fitzpatrick took the loss for GFW striking out three and allwoing 15 earned runs on 12 hits and seven walks. At the plate, Ellie Weber had a hit and two RBIs, while Lauren Schafer had a hit.

Wabasso (9-3, 7-3) hosts a doubleheader against Lester Prairie on Friday, while GFW (2-8, 0-8) hosts a doubleheader against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.

BLHS 10, Springfield 8

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Springfield 10-8 in a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Monday.

Jalyn Louwagie took the loss for Springfield, striking out two while allowing four earned runs on six hits in three innings. At the plate, Abby Groebner was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, while Makay Winkelmann was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Emma Hauger had a hit and three RBIs, while Regan Beadell and Faye Williams each had a hit and an RBI.

Springfield (5-12, 4-8) travels to play Windom Area on Thursday.

PREP BASEBALL

Wabasso 9, GFW 8

WABASSO — Wabasso held off Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 9-8 on Monday in a Tomahawk Division baseball game.

Jackson Remiger was 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored to lead Wabasso at the plate, while Drew Kemp was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and Zach Skoblik was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Jack Burns got the win on the mound in six innings, allowing five hits and no walks for two earned runs while striking out five.

Kaden Rieke led GFW at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Will Bastian was 2 for 3 with two run scored. Owen Swenson took the loss on the mound in an inning of work, allowing six hits and a walk for two earned runs while striking out three.

Wabasso (2-10, 1-9) plays Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in Milroy Tuesday in a nonconference game, while GFW (3-10, 1-7) hosts Springfield in Fairfax in a Tomahawk game Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 10,

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Lester Prairie 10-0 in five innings of a Tomahawk Division baseball game on Monday.

Talan Helget was 2 for 3 with three runs scored to lead St. Mary’s at the plate, while Jack Windschitl was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Merrick Mathiowetz was 1 for 2 with three RBIs. Tyler Mathiowetz got the win on the mound in five innings of work, allowing three hits and no walks while fanning five.

St. Mary’s travels to take on Martin County West on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley crossover game.
