Area runners compete at state cross-country meet

FALCON HEIGHTS — The 2024 State Cross-Country Championships took place on Saturday at Les Bolstadt Golf Course, with several area runners competing in the Class A races.

From Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral, Noah Christensen placed 136th in the Class A boys 5,000m race with a time of 18:36.9. The senior set his PR time this year with a 16:44.6 at the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Cross-Country Championships on Oct. 15 in Mankato.

Also for the boys from the area, Sibley East sophomore Julio Alejandro took 71st (17:29.8) in the boys race, while Wabasso junior Andrew Morin took 112th with a time of 17:59.7. Sibley East senior Gavin Pomplun took 127th with a time of 18:15.1.

For the Class A girls 5,000m race, Sibley East junior Paige Gardiner ran a 19:31.2 to finish 12th, two spots ahead of Wabasso eighth-grader Elsie Leopold, who took 14th with a time of 19:32.6.

Redwood Valley won the Class A boys race as a team with 86 points out of 16 teams, while Cotter/Hope won the Class A girls team race with 116 points of out of 16 teams.

Cotter/Hope freshman Erik Semling won the boys individual championship with a first-place time of 15:23.5. The Class A girls individual title was won by Staples-Motley junior Audrey Brownell, who ran an 18:17.2.
