Area roundup: Tigers knocks off Sleepy Eye

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Springfield 3, Sleepy Eye 1

Springfield upset Sleepy Eye 25-22, 15-25, 25-23, 25-19 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Thursday.

Jasmine Novotny had 13 kills and 16 digs for Springfield, while Teagan Steffl had 10 kills, six digs and five aces. Kendall Krueger had five kills, 24 digs and three aces. Taylor Roiger had 30 set assists, 13 digs and an ace, while Emma Hauger had seven kills, 10 digs and a block.

For Sleepy Eye, Sam Price had 19 kills, six digs, three blocks and two aces, while Makala Strong had six kills and four blocks. Nora Coulson had 22 digs, and Ava Kunkel had 30 set assists and 13 digs.

Springfield (2-8, 1-4) hosts Cathedral on Tuesday while Sleepy Eye (6-6-1, 1-4) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday.

Madelia 3, Loyola 1

MANKATO — Madelia defeated Loyola 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-16 Thursday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division volleyball match.

Ashlynn Sweet led the Blackhawks with 13 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two aces, while Makayla Sorenson had seven kills, seven digs and three aces. Kellie Koberoski had six kills and three digs, and Lauryn Grev had five kills, 13 digs and six aces. Katie Bocock had 17 set assists and six digs, while Alicia Lugo had 15 set assists and 11 digs.

Madelia (4-6-1, 2-2) hosts Cleveland on Tuesday.

Lester Prairie 3, GFW 1

WINTHROP — Lester Prairie downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-26, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.

Ella Nachreiner had six kills for GFW, while Chloe Henrichs and Trinity Stearns had five kills each. Cheyenne Schmidt had nine digs, while Natalie Ahlbrecht had 16 set assists and four aces.

GFW (0-7) plays a tournament at Sibley East on Saturday.

PREP FOOTBALL

Cedar Mountain 56, BLHS 6

HECTOR — Cedar Mountain rolled by Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 56-6 Thursday in a Nine-Man South District, West Subdistrict football game.

Blake Steffl led the Cougars with eight carries for 69 yards and a score while adding one reception for 64 yards and a touchdown. Carson Schiller was 8 for 10 with 218 yards passing and five touchdowns,, with Easton Csordecsies catching three receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Heideman and Zach Sandgren each had a receiving touchdown, and Stan Heiling ran the ball 10 times for 82 yards and a touchdown. Jackson Guetter added three rushes for 46 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Guetter had six total tackles, while Steffl had four tackles and an interception. Sandgren had two interceptions and a tackle.

Cedar Mountain (2-2, 2-2) hosts Hills-Beaver Creek on Friday, Sept. 27.

GIRLS SOCCER

Waseca 5, New Ulm 2

WASECA — Waseca downed New Ulm 5-2 in a Big South Conference girls soccer game on Thursday.

Kaelyn Eikanger had the first goal for New Ulm unassisted, then Olivia Enter had the second, assisted by Eikanger. Ellie Dake had eight saves for New Ulm.

New Ulm (5-5, 1-3) travels to play Mankato West on Saturday.

PREP CROSS COUNTRY

Groebner takes sixth at Glencoe meet

GLENCOE — Matthew Groebner led the Springfield boys cross country team, taking sixth place with a time of 18:11 at a cross country meet in Glencoe on Thursday.

Dylan Dewitt placed 28th with a time of 19:27, while Bryan Buerkle placed 31st with a time of 19:32. Luka Fernandez took 41st with a time of 19:58.

On the girls side of the meet, Katie Thram led the team with a time of 22:23, placing 11th. Marissa Pabst placed 16th with a time of 22:34, wile Lydia Dauer ran a 23:52 for 28th place. Emmie McCone (24:23) placed 37th and Sylvia Hovland (24:42) placed 39th.
