NEW ULM — Not allowing a single shot on goal in the first half and taking an 8-0 lead into halftime, the New Ulm Eagles cruised to an 11-0 shutout win over the Mankato Loyola Crusaders on Monday night in a nonconference boys soccer game at New Ulm High School.

New Ulm got goals from 10 different players in the win, led by two from Methodious Amoah.

The Eagles outshot Loyola 28-6 in shots on goal and their starting goalie Jens Quist didn’t have to do much in the first half as the Crusaders weren’t able to get a shot on goal off in that first half. Quist was subbed out of net in the second half for Angel Sanabria-Luna, who stopped six shots in the second half.

The Eagles, now 7-2 on the year, were entering Monday’s game off of a 3-0 loss at Marshall. Monday’s game gave the Eagles plenty of chances to get subs involved and head coach Tim Plocher a look at what needs work ahead of a tough nonconference meeting with Worthington (7-0-2) at home Tuesday night.

“Our team is really skilled,” Plocher said. “And even games like this where the competition might not be a Marshall or Worthington, we still use it to see where our flaws are and where it was very predominant in the Marshall game where we didn’t have that mid control and it was very obvious. Here it looked like we had mid control, but our passing was still really lacking. We did a lot of just give-and-goes and a lot of through balls and that’s not the type of soccer we really want to play.

“We really want to work on our possession and Worthington is a team that is going to beat us on the possession if we don’t get there first. So even though the scoreline says 11-0, we still have stuff we need to work on.”

After a shot by Logan Goblirsch went off the crossbar, Daniel Brownfield put it in with a header on the rebound for New Ulm’s first goal of the game in the sixth minute of play.

New Ulm had several chances early on in the first half to add to that lead but saw Loyola keeper Riah Krosch stop six shots in a row. New Ulm had three shots hit off the crossbar in the first half alone.

Amoah thought he put the Eagles up 2-0 midway through the half but his goal was waved off after he was called offsides. It didn’t take long after that for New Ulm to get rolling, however, with a goal from Levi Johnson that was assisted by Jackson Ocampo in the 26th minute.

A shot from Josh Shaneman was accidentally headed into the Loyola net by Loyola’s Tate Rachow to give New Ulm a 3-0 lead in the 29th minute, which opened the flood gates.

After Amoah scored his first goal of the night on Ocampo’s second assist of the night for a 4-0 lead in the 30th minute, New Ulm went up 5-0 less than 30 seconds later on a goal from Jensen Gerdts. Amoah scored his second goal of the night in the 33rd minute unassisted before Gerdts dished it off to Cole Frederick for a goal in the 36th minute. The Eagles then went into the half up 8-0 after a throw-in from Seth Schmidt led to a goal from Nicolas Del Castillo Diez in the 40th minute.

Loyola also put a new goalie in net in the second half in RJ Beal.

New Ulm needed just 10 seconds to score in the second half after Shaneman found Austin Krohn for a goal and a 9-0 lead. Tyler Fischer scored in the 54th minute on an assist from Schmidt to put New Ulm 10-0. Loyola’s first shot on goal came with less than 27 minutes left to play, but the slow bouncer was easily scooped up by Sanabria-Luna.

Michael Hames completed the scoring for New Ulm in the 67th minute on an assist by Gerdts.
