Sleepy Eye finishes UMC 3-1 with quarterfinals loss to Rosetown

The Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 baseball team ended Saturday 1-1 in the Upper Midwest Classic, falling to Rosetown 4-3 in the quarterfinals in Essig to finish the UMC 3-1 overall.

Earlier in the day, Sleepy Eye topped New Ulm Junior Legion Gold 8-3 at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

In the win over New Ulm, Sleepy Eye was led by Winsten Nienhaus, who was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Caden Evers had a double and three RBIs, Jon Petermann had a double and an RBI and Mark Anderson had a double and two RBIs. Cody Schultz got the win in 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing six hits and a walk for two earned runs while striking out two.

In the narrow loss to Rosetown, Sleepy Eye was led at the plate by Talan Helget, who was 2 for 3. Arian Saenz and Schultz each had an RBI also. Marcus Martinez pitched the complete game in the loss, allowing four hits and a walk for three earned runs while striking out four.
