Sleepy Eye Jr. Legion wrap up JUMC 1-3 overall

NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion went 0-2 on Saturday to end its time in the 2024 Junior Upper Midwest Classic 1-3 overall.

After dropping an early Saturday game to New Ulm VFW Silver 10-1 at Mueller Park, Sleepy Eye took on Madelia in a third-place bracket game at Johnson Park and fell 4-3.

Tyler Mathiowetz took the loss in three innings of work against Silver, allowing 10 hits and a walk for seven earned runs while striking out four. Cole Eckstein led the Sleepy Eye bats in that game, going 2 for 3, while Landon Wendinger added a double.

In the loss to Madelia, Merrick Mathiowetz took the loss in 2/3 innings of relief, allowing six walks for three earned runs while striking out one.

Damian Sanchez started the game for Sleepy Eye and pitched five innings of one-hit ball, allowing two walks for one unearned run while striking out one. Eckstein led Sleepy Eye again at the plate against Madelia, going 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Tyler Mathiowetz was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Kayden Klein was 2 for 4.

Madelia got just one hit in the game, a double by Tony Zaleski. Zach Jacobs got the win in seven innings for Madelia, allowing nine hits and a walk for one earned run while striking out two.
