Cathedral wins twice to advance to 2A championship
MANKATO — No. 4 New Ulm Cathedral defeated No. 5 Mankato Loyola 13-5 and No. 6 Madelia 5-3 in a pair of Section 2A Baseball Tournament elimination bracket games on Wednesday at ISG Field.
New Ulm will now play No. 1 Springfield in the championship game Thursday at 5 p.m. at ISG Field.
Joey Schugel got the win in Game 1, striking out three while while allowing three unearned runs on one hit and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. Caleb Forstner got the start, striking out two while allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks in four innings. At the plate, Elliot Schabert was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Logan Mielke was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Forstner was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored
Levi Franta earned the win in Game 2 for the Greyhounds, striking out nine while allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks in five innings. Jake Finstad got the save, getting the final out of the seventh inning.
At the plate for Cathedral, Colin Anderson was 2 for 4, while Brock Wellman had two RBIs. Alex Portner was 1 for 3.
Zach Jacobs took the loss for Madelia, striking out five while allowing four earned runs on two hits and four walks. At the plate, Tate Becker was 2 for 4 with a run scored, while Eric Anderson was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Evan Coil added a hit and an RBI.
