Area roundup: MVL wins 3rd game this week with win over MCW

PREP BASEBALL

MVL 17, MCW 3

WELCOME — Minnesota Valley Lutheran rolled past Martin County West 17-3 in a nonconference baseball game on Friday.

MVL was led by Kaden Peterson, who had a home run, a triple and three RBIs, while Bradyn Kube had a home run and a double with five RBIs. Connor Bode, Josh Vander Plas and Jensen Gerdts also had two hits.

Kube also got the win on the mound, giving up two runs and striking out six.

Friday’s win was MVL’s fourth in a row and third this week. The Chargers defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop this past Tuesday, Madelia on Thursday and MCW on Friday to finish its regular season with a 10-9 record overall.

Cathedral 14, JWP 4

JANESVILLE — New Ulm Cathedral beat Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 14-4 in a nonconference baseball game on Friday.

Cathedral was led by Elliot Schabert, who went 2 for 2 with three RBIs, while Jake Finstad went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Collin Anderson went 1 for 3.

Joey Schugel got the win in four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk. He also struck out four.

Cathedral (15-4, 10-4) will travel to Madelia on Monday.

Madelia 14, GHEC/T/ML 0

TRUMAN — Madelia ran past Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 14-0 on Friday in a Valley Conference baseball game.

The Blackhawks were led at the plate Zach Jacobs, who was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Jake Lehman was 2 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored and Tate Becker was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Eric Anderson also had a triple and scored three runs for Madelia, while Tony Zaleski was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Jacobs also got the shutout in all seven innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out 10.

Madelia hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Monday.

NORTH MANKATO — Nicollet beat Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 14-1 in a Valley Conference showcase softball game at Caswell Park on Friday.

Nicollet was led by Jazmyn Goettlicher, who went 4 for 4 with two doubles and seven RBIs, while Leah Bode went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and Zoie Rengstorf went 3 for 3.

Bode got the win in five innings, giving up no runs on two hits and two walks. She struck out seven.

Nicollet will begin its playoffs at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Sleepy Eye.

TCU 5, Madelia 4

NORTH MANKATO — Tri-City United defeated Madelia 5-4 on Friday night in a Valley Conference Showcase softball game at Caswell Park.

Corban Tatro led Madelia at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while Kellie Koberoski and Madelyn Lehman were 1 for 3 each with an RBI. Tatro took the loss in all seven innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and five walks while striking out eight.

LCWM 6, MCW 3

NORTH MANKATO — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial claimed its fourth Valley Conference championship in a row after defeating Martin County West 6-3 in a Valley Conference Showcase softball game at Caswell Park.

Julia Montgomery led the Knights with two hits, one being a homer, while Ella Voges was 2 for 3. Avery Voges got the win in the circle, allowing four hits and no earned runs while striking out 10.

LCWM (17-2, 7-0) has a Section 2AA first-round playoff bye next Tuesday and will host the winner of Tuesday’s Tri-City United vs. Blue Earth Area game at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Springfield 12, RRC 0

LAMBERTON — Springfield shut out Red Rock Central 12-0 in six innings Thursday in a nonconference baseball game.

Springfield was led by Lucas Milbrath, who was 2 for 2 with a triple, an RBI and four runs scored, while Noah Neperman went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Brecken Heiling also was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Jakob Nachreiner was 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI.

Nachreiner also got the win on the mound in six innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 11.

RRC got singles from Tyler Therkilsen and Corey Arkell. Isaac Simonson took the loss in one inning, allowing one earned run on two walks while fanning one.

Springfield (18-2) awaits section playoffs next.

New Ulm boys, girls take third at Waseca meet

WASECA — The New Ulm boys and girls track and field teams both placed third out of seven teams at a Big South Conference Track and Field meet at Waseca High School on Thursday.

Waseca won both the boys and girls side of the meet, with the boys scoring a 143 and the girls scoring a 155. The New Ulm boys scored 122, while the girls scored 105.5.

The New Ulm boys swept the top three spots of the 400, with Easton Clark (52.70), Sullivan Gusso (52.84) and George Gag (53.48) leading the way. Dain Barie placed second in the 800 (2:06.93), while the 4×800 relay team of Barie, Jakob Geiss, Michael Hames and Gusso placed first (8:40.14). Cohen Carpenter placed second in shot put (43-3.5), while Ethan Lieb took third in the high jump (5-10) and third in pole vault (10-6). Clark also took third in triple jump (39-0).

For the New Ulm girls, Kaelyn Eikanger placed second in the 400 (1:04.44), While Ellie Dake took third in shot put (31-4.5). Sophia Berger took second in pole vault (9-6).
