Area roundup: Sleepy Eye cruises past MVL

PREP SOFTBALL

Sleepy Eye 17, MVL 1 (4 innings)

NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye beat Minnesota Valley Lutheran 17-1 in four innings in a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Thursday.

Sleepy Eye was led by Nora Coulson, who went 4 for 4 with three RBIs, while Taylor Berkner went 1 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs and Jace Schauman went 1 for 1 with two walks.

Katelyn Tauer got the win in four innings, giving up one run and three hits. She struck out two.

MVL was led by Briley Henderson, who was 2 for 2, while MacKenna Dressel was 1 for 2 with a double.

Katlyn Stadick got the loss in four innings, giving up 17 runs on 13 hits and eight walks. She also struck out two.

Sleepy Eye (11-6, 7-6) will play MCW on Tuesday, while MVL (2-11, 1-10) will host Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Friday.

Wabasso 8, St. Mary’s 5

SLEEPY EYE — Wabasso beat St. Mary’s in a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Thursday.

Wabasso was led by Camryn Irlbeck, who went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks, while Audrey Johnson went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Avery Carlson went 1 for 3.

Carlson also got the win in seven innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and one walk. She struck out six.

St. Mary’s was led by Reese Hoffman, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Addie Hoffman went 2 for 3 with a double and Nell Weiss went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Taylor Mathiowetz got the loss going 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on five hits and six walks. She also struck out five.

Wabasso (10-4, 10-3) will play BOLD on Saturday, while St. Mary’s (5-7, 5-6) will travel to Nicollet on Friday.

Madelia 6, Nicollet 3

NICOLLET — Madelia beat Nicollet 6-3 in a Valley Conference softball game on Thursday.

Madelia was led by Makayla Sorenson, who went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI, while Kellie Koberoski went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Corban Tatro went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Tatro also got the win going seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits and no walks. She struck out 12.

Nicollet was led by Matilda Carleton, who went 2 for 3, while Cason Forbrook, Jazmyn Goettlicher and Morgan Black all went 1 for 3.

Leah Bode got the loss going seven innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and four walks. She also struck out three.

Belle Plaine 3, LCWM 1

LAKE CRYSTAL — Belle Plaine gave Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial its first loss of the season on Thursday with a 3-1 win in a nonconference softball game.

Nettie Parsons got the loss going 2 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. She struck out six.

LCWM (15-1) will travel to JCC on Monday.

PREP BASEBALL

Springfield 5, Cathedral 1

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield beat Cathedral 5-1 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Springfield was led by Jackson Ludewig, who went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs, while Jakob Nachreiner went 2 for 4 with a double and Noah Neperman went 2 for 2 with a walk and RBI.

Nachreiner also got the win in seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk. He struck out 12.

Cathedral was led by Logan Mielke. who had a double and RBI, while Brock Wellmann had a single and a run scored and Elliott Schabert had a double.

Collin Anderson got the loss, going two innings and giving up five runs. He struck out two.

Springfield (14-2, 10-2) will go to Windom Area on Monday, while Cathedral (12-4, 10-4) will go to Cleveland on Monday.

Sleepy Eye 11, MVL 1

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye beat Minnesota Valley Lutheran 11-1 in six innings in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Sleepy Eye was led by Marcus Martinez, who went 1 for 2 with a home run, while Austin Uecker went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Issac Lendt went 2 for 3.

Cody Schultz got the win in six innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk. He also struck out four.

MVL was led by Kaden Peterson, who went 2 for 3 with a double, while Brennan Bendix went 2 for 2 with a double.

Joshua Vander Plas got the loss in five innings, giving up seven runs on six hits and one walk. He also struck out four.

Sleepy Eye (11-3, 10-3) will play MCW on Saturday in St. James, while MVL will (6-8, 5-7) travel to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Friday.

St. Mary’s 9, Wabasso 2

WABASSO — St. Mary’s beat Wabasso 9-2 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Thursday.

St. Mary’s was led by Talan Helget, who went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, while Jonny Petermann went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI and Mark Anderson went 1 for 5 with a double and an RBI.

Anderson also got the win in six innings, giving up two runs on two hits and one walk. He struck out 13 batters.

Wabasso was led by Jaxon Wagner, who went 1 for 3 with a RBI, while Calvin Haana went 1 for 4 with a RBI.

Ethan Jenniges got the loss in four innings, giving up six runs on six hits and five walks. He also struck out two.

St. Mary’s (11-3, 9-3) will play BLHS on Monday while Wabasso (4-11, 3-10) will play Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday.

Madelia 11,

Mountain Lake 0

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Madelia beat Mountain Lake 11-0 in six innings in a nonconference baseball game on Thursday.

Madelia was led by Zach Jacobs, who went 3 for 4 with a RBI, while Eric Anderson went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and Tate Becker went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk. Evan Coil was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk.

Coil also got the win in six innings, giving up no runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Madelia (9-2, 3-1) will play St. James Area on Friday.

BOYS TENNIS

New Ulm 6,

Redwood Valley 1

NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated Redwood Valley 6-1 on Thursday in a nonconference boys tennis meet.

At No. 1 singles, Zack Lundeen defeated New Ulm’s Mav Johnson 6-4, 6-3.

New Ulm won every other match, however, starting with Charlie Weidman’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Laiten Goodthunder at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Gideon Heins defeated Yzykiel Rendon 6-1, 6-0, while Ian Schotzko beat Reese Regnier 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Joey Kotten and Daniel Brownfield defeated Cole Johnson and Cayden Johnson-Mariner 6-4, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Aaron Black and Ethan Neet defeated Mason Davis and Zach Malecek 6-2, 6-0, while Isaac Dittmer and Eli Dorschner defeated Alex Bourret and Collin Johnson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

New Ulm hosts Waseca at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

PREP GOLF

New Ulm boys take 2nd in Redwood Falls

REDWOOD FALLS — The New Ulm boys golf team took second at a Redwood Valley Golf Invitational on Thursday at Redwood Falls Golf Club.

The St. Peter boys won with a 324, followed by New Ulm (335), Fairmont (343) and Redwood Valley (347).

Redwood Valley won the girls side of the invite with a 387, followed by Fairmont (409), St. Peter (422) and New Ulm (474).

The New Ulm girls were led by Elyse Dreckman, who carded a 111 to tie for 10th, while Rory Gieseke shot a 117 to take 15th. Sophia Cooke turned in a 121 for 16th also for New Ulm, while Brooklyn Hagberg shot a 125 for 19th.

Cedar Mountain boys take 1st in Sanborn

SANBORN — The Cedar Mountain boys golf team won a prep golf meet at Farmers Golf and Health Club on Thursday with a score of 182.

New Ulm Cathedral took second with a 185, followed by Springfield (186) and Red Rock Central (227).

The girls side of the meet was won by Cathedral (241), followed by Wabasso (277). Springfield, RRC and Cedar Mountain were incomplete for the girls side.

The boys medalist was Cedar Mountain’s Ryan Kevelin, who shot a 41. His teammates Blake Schueller and Carson Schiller both shot a 45. Cathedral was led by Owen Strei (42) and Joey Fingland (45). Springfield was led by Braiden Davis, Easton Jensen and Tayte Zihlke, who all scored a 46. RRC was led by Keagan Steen and Kullen Steen, who both shot a 54.

The girls medalist was Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann, who shot a 50. The Cathedral girls were led by Alaina Blomberg (53), while Wabasso was led by Shayna Huhnerkock (58), Cedar Mountain was led by Bailey Woodford (61) and RRC was led by Aryanna Weber (61).
