Area roundup: St. Mary’s, Springfield earn shutouts

PREP BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 4, BLHS 0

SLEEPY EYE — St. Mary’s shut out Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 4-0 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Monday.

St. Mary’s was led by Talan Helget, who went 1 for 2 with a double and a RBI, while Brandon Schmitz went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and Mark Anderson went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Talan Helget got the win on the mound, going six innings and giving up no runs on one hit and three walks while striking out nine.

Alex Taylor took the loss for BLHS, going five innings and giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five. Kaydon Miller was 1 for 3 with a double

St. Mary’s (8-2, 7-2) will play Sleepy Eye on Thursday in a doubleheader. BLHS (0-9, 0-9) will play Springfield on Thursday in a doubleheader.

Springfield 9, Wabasso 0

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield shut out Wabasso 9-0 in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Monday.

Springfield was led by Russell Beers, who went 2 for 4 with a double, while Aiden Moraity went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Kade Nachreiner went 1 for 4 with three RBIs. Jakob Nachreiner had four walks and three runs scored also for the Tigers.

Noah Neperman got the win on the mound, going five innings and giving up zero runs on two hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Wabasso had four players with a single in Joe Liebl, Jayden Remiger, Jaxson Wagner and Will Flowers.

Noah Anderson got the loss, going three innings and giving up four runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out three.

Springfield (10-2, 8-2) will travel to BLHS on Thursday for a doubleheader. Wabasso (3-8, 2-8) will host Red Rock Central at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

PREP SOFTBALL

Wabasso 2, Springfield 1

WABASSO — Wabasso beat Springfield 2-1 in a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Monday.

Wabasso was led by Audrey Johnson and Annabelle Struntz, who both went 1 for 3 with a RBI.

Avery Carlson got the win on the mound in seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Springfield was led by Jada Reese, who went 1 for 3 with a home run.

Jalivia Richert got the loss in the circle, going six innings and giving up two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Springfield (8-3, 8-3) will play BLHS on Thursday.

Edgerton 10, Wabasso 2

WABASSO — Edgerton beat Wabasso 10-2 in a nonconference softball game on Monday night.

Wabasso was led by Avery Carlson, who went 3 for 4 with a double, while Audrey Johnson and Annabelle Struntz both went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Carlson took the loss in five and 2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs, four earned, 12 hits and two walk. She struck out four.

Wabasso (7-4, 7-3) will play GFW on Thursday.

St. Mary’s 12, BLHS 2

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s topped Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 12-2 in five innings of a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Monday.

Taylor Mathiowetz was 2 for 2 with two RBIs to lead the Knights, while Adelinde Hoffman was 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and an RBI. Sidney Tauer was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs also for St. Mary’s, while Reese Hoffmann was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Jasmine Petermann was 1 for 3. Mathiowetz also earned the win in the circle, allowing two hits and nine walks while striking out nine.

Hallie Best was 2 for 3 with a double for BLHS.

St. Mary’s is scheduled to play Sleepy Eye in a doubleheader on Thursday, while BLHS is at Springfield for a doubleheader on Thursday.

PREP GOLF

MVL boys 167, GFW 210

MVL girls 222, GFW Inc.

WINTHROP — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys defeated the Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop boys 167-210 Monday in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet at Winthrop Golf Course.

The MVL girls scored a 222, while the GFW girls were incomplete.

MVL’s Ben Pearson was the medalist for the boys, scoring a 37, followed by MVL’s Brandon Kock (42), MVL’s Nathaniel Lukasek (44) and Justin Ziemer (44), MVL’s James Osterman (47) and GFW’s Lane Olson (48).

MVL’s Jorga Brown was the medalist for the girls with a 43, followed by MVL’s Mackenzie Merseth (50) and GFW’s Jenna Schweiss (57).

New Ulm boys take

3rd in Waseca

WASECA — The New Ulm boys golf team took third Monday at the second Big South Conference East boys golf event, finishing with a 166.

St. Peter took first at the meet with a 144, followed by Waseca (161), New Ulm, Jackson County Central (170), Blue Earth Area (177) and Fairmont (184).

St. Peter’s Kaiden Brovold was the medalist with a 34.

New Ulm was led by Will Fossen, who shot a 40 to tie for ninth, while Mason Buegler carded a 41 to take 11th. Brayden Wendinger turned in a 42 to tie for 12th also for New Ulm, while Gavin Epper shot a 43 to tie for 16th.

New Ulm girls take

5th in Fairmont

FAIRMONT — The New Ulm girls golf team took fifth at Interlaken Golf Club on Monday in the second Big South Conference East girls golf event with a score of 238.

Blue Earth Area took first with a 188, while Fairmont was second (205), Waseca was third (222), St. Peter took fourth (225) and Jackson County Central was incomplete.

BEA’s Katelyn Storbeck was the medalist with a 41.

New Ulm was led by Elyse Dreckman, who tied for 11th with a 57, while Brooklyn Hagberg and Rory Gieseke shot a 59 to tie for 19th. Sophia Cooke shot a 63 to tie for 21st.

SEU boys 166, RRC boys 210, Wabasso boys Inc.

SEU girls 222, Wabasso girls 253, RRC girls Inc.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye United won both the boys and girls side of a home golf invitational Monday at Sleepy Eye Golf Club.

The SEU boys scored a 166, followed by Red Rock Central with a 210. The Wabasso team was incomplete.

The SEU girls scored a 222, followed by Wabasso with a 253. RRC was incomplete.

SEU’s Blaine Arneson was the medalist for the boys meet, shooting a 39. He was followed by SEU’s Nolan Kucera (41), RRC’s Keagan Steen (42), and SEU’s Anders Coulson and Kaleb Weiss (43).

For the girls meet, SEU’s Kiara Murphy was the medalist with a 47, followed by RRC’s Aryanna Weber (50), SEU’s Sam Price (54), SEU’s Chloe Walter (56) and Wabasso’s Chloe Rohlik (57).

Cathedral boys 168, Springfield boys 178

Cathedral girls 265, Springfield girls Inc.

SPRINGFIELD — The New Ulm Cathedral boys defeated the Springfield boys 168-178 in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet at Springfield Golf Course.

The Cathedral girls team scored a 265, while the Springfield girls team was incomplete.

Cathedral’s Owen Strei was the medalist for the boys, shooting a 49, followed by Cathedral’s Joey Fingland (41), Springfield’s Sam Rummel and Cathedral’s Will Marti (42) and Springfield’s Braiden Davis (44).

Springfield’s Ava Lipetzka was the girls medalist, shooting a 52. She was followed by teammate Mavri Winkelmann (54) and Cathedral’s Alaina Blomberg (55), Emma Hoffmann (66) and Chloe Gilles (70).
