Area roundup: Greyhounds baseball puts up 30 in win over BLHS

PREP BASEBALL

Cathedral 30, BLHS 12 (5 innings)

HECTOR — New Ulm Cathedral racked up 19 hits and drew eight walks on Thursday as it blasted past Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 30-12 in five innings of a Tomahawk Conference baseball game.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Levi Franta led the Greyhounds at the plate, going 4 for 5 with five RBIs, two doubles and a triple, while Colin Anderson was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Rylan Koopmann was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored also for Cathedral, while Brock Carlson was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored and Brock Wellman was 2 for 5 with three RBIs and a double.

Matt Seidl got the win in relief for Cathedral, allowing two unearned runs on one walk and one hit in two innings. He struck out one. Matt Schommer picked up five strikeouts in relief for the Greyhounds in 2 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on one hit and seven walks.

For BLHS, Alex Taylor took the loss on the mound in 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six walks for six earned runs while striking out two. He was also 1 for 2 with two RBIs, while Carson Hickle was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored and Marvin Markgraf was 1 for 2 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Cathedral (3-1, 3-1) travels to take on BOLD on Friday at 5 p.m., while BLHS hosts Wabasso at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Springfield 10, St. Mary’s 0 (5 innings)

SPRINGFIELD — While the Springfield Tigers didn’t pick up a lot of hits in Thursday’s Tomahawk Conference baseball game with Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, they did bring home a lot of runs as they earned a 10-0 win over the Knights in five innings.

The Tigers scored four in the bottom of the fifth to end things early due to the 10-run lead rule.

Brecken Heiling led the Tigers at the plate, going 1 for 1 with a double, two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored. Jakob Nachreiner was 1 for 1 with a double, a walk and two RBIs also for the Tigers.

Nachreiner also got the five-inning shutout on the mound, allowing three walks and just one hit while striking out eight.

St. Mary’s got its lone hit from Talan Helget on a single. Merrick Mathiowetz took the loss in four innings, allowing two hits and five walks for five earned runs while striking out four.

Springfield (3-0, 3-0) plays at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College, playing Hayfield first and Jackson County Central second. St. Mary’s (2-2, 2-2) hosts Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial on Friday.

Loyola 7, Madelia 1

MANKATO — Mankato Loyola/Immanuel Lutheran defeated Madelia 7-1 on Thursday in a Valley Conference baseball game.

Tony Zaleski was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a double to lead Madelia at the plate, while Jake Lehman added a double and a run scored.

Tate Becker pitched 3 1/3 innings in the loss for Madelia, allowing five hits and two walked for seven unearned runs while striking out three.

The Blackhawks committed five errors in the game.

PREP SOFTBALL

Springfield 10, St. Mary’s 3

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield took down Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 10-3 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.

Ella Gies led the Tigers at the plate, going 2 for 2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks, while Emma Hauger was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Jasmine Novotny was 2 for 4 with two RBIs also for the Tigers.

Jalivia Richert got the win in the circle in all seven innings, allowing one earned run on three walks and three hits while striking out nine.

St. Mary’s was led by Alexa Pelzel, who was 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Taylor Mathiowetz doubled and scored a run. Mathiowetz also pitched six innings in the loss, allowing nine hits and nine walks for six earned runs while fanning two.

Springfield (4-0, 4-0) hosts Mountain Lake at 4:30 p.m. Friday in nonconference action, while St. Mary’s is at Wabasso for conference action on Monday.

Sleepy Eye 9, GFW 4

WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye topped Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 9-4 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.

Katelyn Tauer was 4 for 5 with two RBIs and two doubles to lead Sleepy Eye, while Brissa Hernandez was 4 for 5 with two runs scored. Taylor Berkner got the complete-game win in the circle, allowing four hits and five walks for three earned runs while striking out 15.

GFW was led by Halle Bleick, who went 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Taylor Schafer was 1 for 2 with a walk also for GFW.

Isabella Trebelhorn pitched four innings in the loss, allowing 10 hits and two walks for three earned runs while striking out two.

Sleepy Eye (2-3, 1-3) hosts St. Clair on Monday for nonconference action, while GFW (0-4, 0-4) is at Stewart to take on Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in conference action at 5 p.m. Monday.

Wabasso 15, MVL 0 (4 innings)

WABASSO — Wabasso cruised by Minnesota Valley Lutheran 15-0 in four innings in a Tomahawk Conference softball game Thursday.

The game was called after four innings due to the 15-run lead rule.

Avery Carlson got the win for the Rabbits in the circle, throwing two perfect innings with four strikeouts, while Aylah Jenniges also pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. At the plate, Carlson was 2 for 2 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Macy Rohlik was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Kayleigha Johnson, Peyton Jenniges and Annabelle Struntz each added a hit and an RBI.

Katlyn Stadick took the loss for MVL, striking out four while allowing seven hits and 10 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Karlee Prahl had the Chargers’ lone hit on the game.

Wabasso (3-1, 3-1) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday. MVL (1-1, 1-1) travels to Sleepy Eye on Monday.

PREP GOLF

MVL girls win at Madelia invite

MADELIA — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran girls team won a golf invitational at Madelia Golf Course on Thursday, scoring 216 to lead the way.

Madelia scored 252, while Martin County West scored 289 and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial was incomplete. Jorga Brown led the way for the Chargers, shooting a 47 to finish as the girls medalist.

The MVL boys team placed second in their side of the meet, Scoring 171 to LCWM’s 169. Madelia and MCW tied for third with a 186. Ben Pearson led the MVL boys, shooting a 36 to finish as the boys medalist.

MVL plays again on Friday, taking on New Ulm Cathedral at Mayflower Country Club.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

MVL/NUC boys take second at JWP invite

JANESVILLE — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral boys team placed second out of nine teams at the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton invitational, faling a single point short of tying Maple River’s 102 for the top spot.

JWP came in third with 74.5, followed by Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet (62.5), Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey (54), Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (47) Loyola/Cleveland (37), Madelia/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman (37) and St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran (27).

ON the girls side of the meet, JW placed first with a 131, followed by Nicollet (102), Loyola/Cleveland (92), MVL (77), WEM (64), Maple River (53), St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran (43) MLA/C (35) and M/GHEC/ML/T (20).

Will Kaesermann led the MVL/NUC boys, placing first in both the boys 110-meter hurdles (16.27) and the boys 300-meter hurdles (44.96) while also placing third in boys triple jump (38-2.75). Josh Bentler won the boys 100-meter (11.64), while Elliot Hoffman placed second in the boys 1,600 (4:53.12) and third in the boys 800 (2:07.72). The MVL/NUC boys 4×200 relay team of Justin Thompson, Benter, Jared Frey and Ben Halvorson placed first (1:36.48), while Benjamin Rossow placed third in boys discus (110-10).

For LCWM/Nicollet, Drew Turgeon placed first in boys discus (123-07) and third in boys shot put (40-10.75), while Levi Freyberg placed third in boys pole vault (11).

On the girls side of the meet, MVL/NUC’s Avery Hopp placed second in the girls 100 (13.88), while Emily Brown placed second in the girls 100-meter hurdles (18.59) and third in the girls 300-meter hurdles (53.40). Ellie Kaesermann placed second in girls triple jump (30-9.25) while Jennarae Bates placed third in girls discus (82-05).

For LCWM/Nicollet, Savannah Klockziem placed first in the girls 300-meter hurdles (51.01) and second in girls long jump (14-6.25). Evie Jones placed second in the girls 1,600 (6:16.78), while Katelin Flack placed first in girls discus (104-11) and third in the girls 800 (2:48.27) and Jaci Jordan placed third in the girls 3,200 (13:51.31). Alyssa Greenough placed first in girls high jump (4-10) and Maggie Graupman placed first in girls triple jump (31-3).

M/GHEC/ML/T’s Kayla Mattson placed third in the girls 400 (1:08.15).

MVL/NUC will travel to Maple River on Tuesday.
